On Monday, Iran said the United States’ recent attacks on its nuclear sites have expanded the range of legitimate targets for the Iranian armed forces. This statement came after former US President Donald Trump hinted at a regime change in Tehran.

Ebrahim Zolfaqari, the spokesperson for Iran’s Khatam al-Anbiya central military headquarters, said:

“Mr Trump, the gambler, you may start this war, but we will be the ones to end it.”

As global attention turned to Iran’s response to the US strikes, Iran and Israel exchanged air and missile attacks.

These developments followed the US bombing of Iran’s nuclear sites over the weekend. Trump suggested that this might result in the overthrow of the Iranian government.

Fordow Site Heavily Damaged

According to commercial satellite images, the US attack on the Fordow nuclear plant, located far underground, caused major damage or possibly destroyed the facility and the uranium-enriching centrifuges it contained.

However, experts said the full status of the site is still unconfirmed.

Trump made multiple posts on his social media platform, Truth Social, where he claimed the attacks caused major destruction.

“Monumental Damage was done to all Nuclear sites in Iran,” he stated.

He also wrote, “The biggest damage took place far below ground level. Bullseye!!!”

Earlier, he posted, “It’s not politically correct to use the term ‘regime change,’ but if the current Iranian regime is unable to MAKE IRAN GREAT AGAIN, why wouldn’t there be a regime change??? MIGA!!!”

These comments suggest Trump may be adopting a more confrontational policy toward Iran.

Despite Trump’s statements, members of the current US administration, including Vice President JD Vance and Defence Secretary Pete Hegseth, publicly said the United States is not seeking to overthrow the Iranian government.

‘Operation Midnight’

The US entered the conflict early Sunday morning by bombing three Iranian nuclear sites: Fordow, Natanz, and Isfahan. The attack was called Operation Midnight and involved the US Air Force’s B-2 Spirit stealth bombers.

”The US used 75 precision-guided munitions, including bunker-buster bombs, and launched more than two dozen Tomahawk missiles,” says General Dan Caine, chairperson of the Joint Chiefs of Staff.

In response, Iran launched several missiles at Israeli targets. The attack injured civilians and caused serious damage in Tel Aviv.

Iran’s government condemned the US strikes and said it would defend itself using all available force.

Tehran insisted that its nuclear programme is peaceful and not aimed at developing weapons.

An unnamed Iranian official claimed that most of the country’s enriched uranium had been moved before the airstrikes. However, this claim has not been independently verified.

Images also showed substantial movement of trucks and bulldozers around Fordow in the days preceding the strikes, in what appeared to be an attempt by Iran to move out equipment and nuclear materials stored at the protected site in anticipation of US strikes.

The International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) said there was no increase in off-site radiation levels after the airstrikes.

IAEA Director General Rafael Grossi told CNN that a full assessment of damage, especially underground, is still ongoing.

Pope Leo XIV Urges for Peace

Pope Leo XIV called for immediate peace in the Middle East. He warned that the US airstrikes on Iranian nuclear sites and Iran’s missile retaliation against Israeli cities could trigger uncontrollable escalation.

During his weekly address from the Apostolic Palace, the Pope said:

“We must halt the tragedy of war before it descends into an irreparable abyss.”

He described the situation as “alarming” and “dramatic,” and said the suffering of civilians, especially in Gaza and other conflict zones, must not be overlooked.

He added that the world’s call for peace must be met with “responsibility and reason,” and not drowned out by “the noise of weapons and rhetoric that fuel conflict.”

Israel Strikes Back at Iranian Airports

Israel confirmed it carried out airstrikes targeting at least six airports across Iran, in the west, east, and central regions.

According to a statement posted on Israel’s official X (formerly Twitter) account, remotely operated drones destroyed 15 Iranian military aircraft and helicopters.

The Israeli strikes also damaged runways, underground shelters, refuelling aircraft and various military jets, including F-14s, F-5s and AH-1 helicopters.

Israel said these attacks weakened Iran’s air force and disrupted its ability to launch aircraft from those bases.

Missile Sirens Across Israel

Following these attacks, Israeli media, including The Times of Israel, reported new missile launches from Iran. This triggered missile sirens across central and southern parts of the country.

In Jerusalem, air raid sirens interrupted parliament proceedings, and lawmakers were seen rushing to shelters.

These alerts followed an earlier wave of Iranian missile attacks that caused similar alerts in northern Israel.

Yemen Declares Entry Into War

The Yemeni Armed Forces announced they are officially entering the war following the US strikes on Iran.

Brigadier General Yahya Saree, spokesperson for the Yemeni Armed Forces, wrote on social media:

“Yemen is officially entering the war (against the United States and Israel). Keep your ships away from our territorial waters.”

Protests Erupt in Iran and the United States

In Iran, crowds gathered at the holy shrine of Hazrat Masumeh (SA) in Qom to protest the American and Israeli attacks.

At the same time, protests broke out in the United States. Anti-war demonstrations were reported in several cities.

ICAN Condemns US Strikes

The International Campaign to Abolish Nuclear Weapons (ICAN) condemned the US airstrikes on Iran’s nuclear sites, calling them illegal.

In a statement on Sunday, ICAN urged the US to halt what it called “illegal” military actions and return to diplomacy.

ICAN’s Executive Director Melissa Parke said, “Military action is not the solution to concerns about Iran’s nuclear programme.”

She added that US intelligence agencies have assessed that Iran is not actively pursuing nuclear weapons, which makes the strikes unnecessary and dangerous.

She also said the attack could harm global efforts to prevent the spread of nuclear arms.

After the USA struck three nuclear facilities in Iran, namely Natanz, Fordow and Isfahan, the Islamic Republic of Iran has officially decided to close the Strait of Hormuz in retaliation. At first, this seems like a low-impact retaliation, but only for those who don’t understand the severe impacts of this decision.

This closure can likely send the global economy into a recession due to its ability to increase oil and LPG prices. People are underestimating the economic fallout this can bring.

What is the Strait of Hormuz, and why is it Important?

Among the world’s most important oil chokepoints, the Strait of Hormuz is geo-strategically important to the United States, Asia and beyond, as the strength of the global economy is heavily dependent on the flow of oil.

The strait is located between Oman and Iran, connecting the Gulf to the north with the Gulf of Oman to the south and the Arabian Sea beyond.

It is 33km wide at its narrowest point, with the shipping lane just 3km wide.

About one-fifth of the world’s total oil consumption passes through the strait. Between the start of 2022 and last month, approximately 17.8 million to 20.8m barrels of crude, condensate, and fuels flowed through the strait daily, according to data from analytics firm Vortexa.

Members of the Organisation of the Petroleum Exporting Countries (OPEC) – Saudi Arabia, Iran, the United Arab Emirates, Kuwait and Iraq – export most of their crude via the strait, mainly to Asia.

The Strait of Hormuz is a Lifeline for Global Energy

The Strait of Hormuz is the artery through which nearly a fifth of the world’s oil passes daily. We’re talking about 20 million barrels of crude oil and condensate, in addition to massive volumes of liquefied natural gas.

It’s not just oil, though. Europe specifically is highly dependent on the LNG gas from the middle east after it’s boycott of Russian oil and gas.

Apart from Europe, South East Asian countries like Bangladesh, India and Pakistan source atleast 70% of it’s LNG gas from Strait, and the current closure can have a massive impact on these already economically troubled nations.

That’s why any disruption here sends shockwaves far beyond the Middle East. Remember the 2019 tanker attacks? Or the U.S.-Iran standoff that brought the world to the brink of war after the assassination of Qassem Soleimani? The Strait of Hormuz has always been a pressure point.

When Iran Closes the Strait

Closing the Strait has the advantage of being a means to impose a direct cost on Trump, as it would trigger an oil price spike with a near-immediate inflationary effect in the US and across the globe.

This time, it’s also about retaliation on the basis of recent events and their twisted westernised rhetoric, like the Israel-Gaza war, Israeli strikes on Iranian officials, and Washington attacking the nuclear facilities of Iran illegally.

Surrounded by sanctions and regional rivals, Tehran leans on the Strait as its trump card. And it’s hard to argue with the logic: No country can afford the Strait going dark, not even for a few days.

U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio has called on China to help stop Iran from closing it, telling Fox News: “I encourage the Chinese government in Beijing to call them about that, because they heavily depend on the Strait of Hormuz for their oil.”

There are already reports that some supertankers have U-turned in the strategic waterway following the US strikes.

The Global Domino Effect

Global oil prices never take bad news well. Even a whisper of conflict in the Strait of Hormuz sends futures soaring. A full-blown closure would create an oil shock not seen since the 1970s.

Developing countries, already battling inflation and energy crises, would be hit hardest.

Europe, still reeling from its scramble to replace Russian gas, would face a new nightmare. Asia’s industrial giants like Japan, South Korea, China would have to rethink their energy calculus. The United States, despite being a major producer, isn’t immune either.

Accelerate Prosperity, an initiative of the Aga Khan Development Network (AKDN), in collaboration with the NUST Professional Development Centre (PDC), successfully concluded the Certification in Sustainable Innovation (CSI) 2025, a national incubation program supporting climate-conscious startups in Pakistan.

The program, funded by the Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ) of Germany through Kreditanstalt für Wiederaufbau (KfW) Development Bank, aimed to support early-stage and post- revenue businesses developing green or greening solutions by helping them overcome barriers such as limited funding, lack of technical expertise, and weak market linkages. The certification awarded through the program is officially accredited by the Ministry of Climate Change and Environmental Coordination.

The program was a 3-month journey designed to equip impact-driven ventures with the tools, knowledge, and networks needed to scale sustainable innovation. Around 20 high-potential startups from across Pakistan were selected through a competitive process.

Participants engaged in virtual business courses, in-person expert training, tailored advisory, and had access to product testing facilities at NUST, gaining practical insight and skills to support their green growth journey.

PAA Urges Reversal of Unjustified WHT Hike at FPCCI Post-Budget Forum

PAA voiced the industry’s collective concern over the recent increase in Withholding Tax (WHT) on specified services.

Karachi, June 23, 2025: A delegation from the Pakistan Advertisers Association (PAA) today represented the advertising and marketing communications sector at the Post-Budget Consultative Meeting on Tax Anomalies convened by the Federation of Pakistan Chambers of Commerce & Industry (FPCCI).

At the forum, PAA voiced the industry’s collective concern over the recent increase in Withholding Tax (WHT) on specified services, including advertising, from 4% to 6%—a move they termed as economically punitive and unsustainable. The delegation presented a detailed case outlining the severe impact of the hike, describing it as equivalent to a 17% super tax when viewed in relation to average net profit margins of just 15%.

“In an environment already strained by rising HR costs, inflated utility bills, and reduced client spending, this additional tax burden threatens the viability of service-based businesses,” said Ahmed Kapadia, Chairman Pakistan Advertising Association. He further added, “We urge the government to immediately reverse the hike and rationalize the WHT to 3%, reflecting the true tax liability of compliant service firms.”

The PAA’s written appeal was submitted to FPCCI leadership, calling for immediate advocacy with the Federal Board of Revenue and Ministry of Finance.

Experts suggest that the new Islamic year, 1447 Hijri, is likely to start on Friday, June 27. This is because astronomical forecasts show that the Muharram moon will not be visible on the evening of June 25.

Astronomers noted that the moon’s conjunction is expected at 3:31 pm on June 25. Due to this timing, it is unlikely the crescent will be visible that evening with the naked eye in South Asia or the Middle East.

However, there might be some chance of moon visibility using telescopes in select areas of the United States.

According to astronomers, the best chance of the moon being visible is on Wednesday evening, June 26. This supports the prediction that Muharram will begin on Friday, June 27, in Pakistan and most other countries.

Pakistan’s Central Ruet-e-Hilal Committee is expected to meet on June 26 to confirm the moon sighting and officially announce the beginning of the Islamic year.

Meanwhile, the Punjab government has announced the imposition of Section 144 across the province from the 1st to the 10th of Muharram ul Haram.

Beijing’s productive ties with Islamabad serve as a bulwark against Indian influence in the region. Access to the Arabian Sea is another bonus. For the longest time, both parties have enjoyed a mutually beneficial relationship.

Pakistan Needs to Achieve a Delicate Equilibrium 

Pakistan finds itself walking on a dangerous tight rope. It must maintain strong socioeconomic and political ties with China and foster a healthy diplomatic relationship with the US.

An effective solution would see issue-specific cooperation with the US, focused on digital technology and distant from the delicate matters of regional conflicts and military aid. Pakistan should continue its economic projects with China and encourage investment.

However, the end goal should be for the state to minimise over-reliance on the superpowers. Unquestionable subservience to either side is wrong, but productive friendships ought to do more good than harm.

The Supreme Leader of Iran, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, has sent his foreign minister, Abbas Araqchi, to Moscow to personally deliver a letter to Russian President Vladimir Putin.

He asked for more support following the most significant U.S. military attack on Iran since the 1979 revolution.

U.S. President Donald Trump and Israel have both publicly hinted at the possibility of killing Khamenei and pursuing regime change in Iran. This has raised alarm in Moscow, where officials believe such actions could push the Middle East into deeper chaos.

While President Putin has openly condemned Israel’s recent attacks on Iran, he has not commented on the U.S. strikes on Iranian nuclear facilities.

Last week, however, he called for restraint and offered Moscow’s help to mediate the escalating nuclear crisis.

A senior source informed Reuters that Araqchi’s mission to Moscow includes handing over a letter from Khamenei and asking for more decisive backing from Russia.

Moreover, Iranian sources also told Reuters that Tehran is not satisfied with the current level of support. They want Moscow to do more, although they didn’t specify the kind of assistance expected.

Iran Asks Putin for Stronger Support

The Kremlin confirmed that Putin would meet with Araqchi, but didn’t provide details on the agenda.

Speaking to TASS, Araqchi said Iran and Russia are “coordinating their positions on the current escalation in the Middle East.” Putin has repeatedly offered to mediate between Iran and the U.S.

He stated that Russia had shared proposals with both countries and is committed to ensuring Iran’s continued access to peaceful nuclear energy.

Last week, Putin refused to discuss whether the U.S. or Israel would target Khamenei. He added that Israel had given security assurances for Russian personnel working on two new nuclear reactors at Iran’s Bushehr facility.

Russia remains a long-time ally of Iran and holds influence as a permanent member of the U.N. Security Council and as a former signatory to the nuclear deal that Trump abandoned during his first term in 2018.

Despite this history, Russia’s current stance is cautious.

With the Ukraine war entering its fourth year, President Putin has shown no public interest in confronting the United States over Iran, especially as Trump appears to be working on restoring ties with Moscow.

A new language study has proved Americans to be the most profane online English users. The researchers scrutinised 1.7 billion words from blogs, news sites, and websites. Americans use more curse words than any other group of people.

The Surprising Online Tough Guy

The research didn’t look at Twitter and Facebook, but was limited to general internet content. Nonetheless, the results surprised many, including the Australian researchers themselves, who thought their nation would top the list.

Instead, Australians took the third place. The British ranked second. Americans cursed the most with 36 filthy words per 100,000. Brits were next with 25. Aussies were close behind at 22.

Why Americans Curse More

Anonymity is a big factor, says co-author Martin Schweinberger. “People tend to say things online they wouldn’t say face-to-face,” he said. Cultural tolerance for profanity is different, too. “Americans are more lenient online,” Schweinberger said.

He pointed out that in person, Americans swear less than many other English-speaking people. However, behind a keyboard, they open up and show their true colours.

The Dataset and Its Scope

The research took place across 20 English-speaking countries. Researchers constructed a database of 600 profanities. They consisted of popular curse words, acronyms such as “WTF,” and others.

They then counted how frequently these occurred throughout the dataset. Bangladesh proved to be the most courteous, with just 7 curses for every 100,000 words.

Social Media Tells a Different Story

While social media sites were not included in the primary study, researchers examined them in isolation. The biggest swearers on social media? New Zealanders, then the Irish, then Australians.

In everyday conversation, America places a low value on vulgarity, revealing a divide between online and offline conduct.

Swearing as a Cultural Indicator

Linguists indicate that deciphering swearing is more than a matter of tallying profanity. New Zealand linguist Andrea Calude said it’s a matter of local identity.

“Language indicates membership and non-membership,” she said. “Even in cyberspace, communities determine the use of English.”

Schweinberger concurred. He once cursed informally in front of Americans, and immediately noticed their expressions change. “It was like I’d done something horrible,” he remembered.

His lesson: Saying dirty words isn’t always a bad thing. It’s just when and where to say them.

India’s Home Minister Amit Shah has said that the Indus Waters Treaty (IWT) between India and Pakistan will never be restored, and that the water previously flowing to Pakistan will now be diverted for domestic use. Speaking to The Times of India, Shah stated:

Pakistan denied the allegation and called for a neutral investigation. Despite a ceasefire being agreed between the two countries last month, the status of the treaty remains unchanged.

India’s Retaliatory Action and Pakistan’s Response

According to Reuters, India plans to increase its use of water from a major river that feeds into Pakistani agricultural land.

Pakistan’s foreign ministry did not immediately comment on Shah’s latest remarks, but has previously stated that the treaty does not allow unilateral withdrawal.

It added that any attempt to block water flow to Pakistan would be considered “an act of war.” Islamabad is also exploring legal action against India under international law.

Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif earlier condemned India’s action as “a blatant violation and act of water aggression”, warning that Pakistan would respond accordingly, based on decisions made during the 24 April National Security Committee meeting.

Opposition from Within Indian-Held Kashmir

Omar Abdullah, the Chief Minister of Indian-held Kashmir, strongly opposed diverting water to other Indian states. He said:

“Nobody will take it. At least I will not allow it as of now. First, allow us to use our water, and then we will talk about others. There is a drought-like situation in Jammu. There is no water in the taps.”

Speaking to The Telegraph (India), Abdullah criticised the central government’s proposed 113 km-long canal project that would reroute water from the Indus system. He questioned:

“Why should I take water to Punjab? There are already three rivers with Punjab (and the other two states) under the Indus Waters Treaty. Did they give us water when we needed it?”

He referenced past issues, such as Punjab’s refusal to share water during disputes over the Ujh multipurpose project and the Shahpur Kandi barrage.

“We were in dire straits then, but they kept us waiting for years… After years, some work was done on the Shahpur Kandi barrage,” he added.

Pakistan announced on Saturday that it plans to formally recommend U.S. President Donald Trump for the Nobel Peace Prize, acknowledging his role in ending the recent conflict between India and Pakistan.

Trump has often expressed his desire for the award and claimed credit for preventing a major war.

Some Pakistani analysts believe this move could influence Trump’s stance on joining Israel in attacks on Iran’s nuclear facilities.

Pakistan has strongly condemned Israel’s actions, calling them a breach of international law and a serious threat to regional peace.

Earlier in May, Trump unexpectedly announced a ceasefire between India and Pakistan, which ended four days of rising military tension.

He has since claimed he stopped a nuclear war, saved millions of lives, and received little recognition for it.

Pakistan agrees that the U.S. played a critical role in stopping the violence. However, India insists the ceasefire was a direct result of talks between its two militaries.

In a statement, Pakistan said:

“President Trump demonstrated great strategic foresight and stellar statesmanship through robust diplomatic engagement with both Islamabad and New Delhi, which de-escalated a rapidly deteriorating situation. This intervention stands as a testament to his role as a genuine peacemaker.”

Nominations and Reactions

Governments are permitted to nominate candidates for the Nobel Peace Prize. There was no immediate comment from U.S. officials, and Indian authorities did not respond to media requests.

Trump has often offered to mediate on the Kashmir issue, which remains the core conflict between India and Pakistan.

While Pakistan supports international involvement, India remains firm on handling the matter bilaterally.

Trump’s comments on Kashmir have challenged the traditional U.S. policy in the region, which had leaned towards India as a counterbalance to China.

These moves have also raised questions about his relationship with Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

In a social media post on Friday, Trump listed several conflicts he claimed to have helped resolve, including the India–Pakistan situation and the Abraham Accords. He added:
“I won’t get a Nobel Peace Prize no matter what I do.”

Army Chief Meets Trump, Mixed Response in Pakistan

Pakistan’s announcement comes just days after Army Chief Field Marshal Asim Munir had lunch with Trump.

This was notable as it marked the first time a Pakistani military leader was hosted at the White House while an elected civilian government was in power in Islamabad.

Trump’s scheduled meeting with Modi at the recent G7 summit in Canada did not occur after Trump left early, but the two later spoke by phone.

According to the Indian government, Modi told Trump:

“India does not and will never accept mediation” regarding its dispute with Pakistan.
Mushahid Hussain, a former head of Pakistan’s Senate Defence Committee, supported the nomination:

“Trump is good for Pakistan. If this panders to Trump’s ego, so be it. All the European leaders have been sucking up to him big time.”

However, not everyone in Pakistan agreed with the decision. Critics pointed to Trump’s support for Israel’s actions in Gaza and the broader Middle East, which has caused outrage in Pakistan.

Talat Hussain, a prominent political talk show host, criticised the move on X (formerly Twitter): “Israel’s sugar daddy in Gaza and cheerleader of its attacks on Iran isn’t a candidate for any prize. And what if he starts to kiss Modi on both cheeks again after a few months?”
