Prior to the recent hike in federal excise duty, the fruit juice industry was flourishing, with a turnover of approximately Rs 60 billion, investments totaling Rs 40 billion, and significant new job creation. From the consumer standpoint, heightened competition had broadened the product range to include healthier, sugar-restricted options. However, since the FED was implemented, the industry has faced significant growth setbacks. Sales have dropped, leading to a 40% reduction in volume, which has rippled through the industry. Many companies are now operating below full production capacity, and new investments have been delayed.

A particularly troubling aspect of the government’s taxation policy is its approach to lumping fruit beverages and packaged juices—including 100% fruit juices, nectars, and juice drinks—together for taxation. It’s essential to acknowledge the significance of these beverages in modern fast-paced lifestyles and diets; they provide essential nutrients, hydration, and convenience, helping consumers meet their daily nutritional needs.

To address these concerns, it’s crucial to differentiate between the various beverage categories. This could be implemented through front-of-package (FOP) labels and a tiered taxation system, which is standard practice in many countries worldwide. Furthermore, the government should reevaluate its taxation strategy across the beverage industry.

While meeting national tax goals is crucial, a more effective strategy might involve reevaluating the tax structure to broaden the overall tax base, rather than increasing taxes on already taxed industries. Additionally, the government should intensify regulations on the informal beverage sector to guarantee product safety and quality while effectively incorporating it into the tax system.

During 2023, Pak-Qatar General Takaful Limited achieved a turnover of PKR 1.26 Billion. Shareholders Fund posted a net profit after tax of PKR 101.2 million with an EPS of PKR 1.99 per share despite all challenges; while the Participants’ Takaful Fund (Waqf Fund) generated an annual surplus of PKR 40.57 million. The Company has increased its net equity & break-up value per share through impressive growth in its profits.

“I was struggling to find scoring opportunities, and when I noticed the fine leg fielder positioned up in the circle, I instinctively played the shot,” Ayub explained. “It wasn’t a deliberate decision to avoid looking at the ball; it just happened naturally.”

Despite its allure, Ayub remains pragmatic about the risks associated with the ‘no-look’ shot, opting to deploy it sparingly and only when circumstances demand it.

“I don’t prioritize this since it is a high-risk shot. I try to play the other shots more often and only play the no-look shot when it is absolutely necessary,”

“My target is Man of the Match, not fifty or a hundred. I don’t think about numbers as I aim to win the match for my team. It can be any figure, 50, 70 or 100, but I don’t think about that since I’m focused on winning the match,” Ayub emphasized.

While Ayub has showcased glimpses of his talent in domestic and PSL matches, his transition to the international arena has been a work in progress.

With 19 T20I appearances under his belt since his debut against Afghanistan, Ayub acknowledges the need to translate his domestic success into consistent performances at the highest level. He has scored a meagre 270 runs in 17 innings at a strike rate of 131.06.

FBR Proposes 90% Tax On Mobile Recharges For Non-Filers

In an effort to increase tax revenues and ensure everyone contributes their fair share, the Federal Board of Revenue (FBR) has proposed a bold move targeting those who haven’t been filing their taxes.

A Bold Step Toward Tax Compliance

Under this new plan, the FBR wants to raise the withholding tax significantly, jumping from a small 2.5 per cent to a whopping 90 per cent for those who haven’t been following the rules.

Let’s say someone who hasn’t been filing their taxes decides to top up their mobile phone with Rs100. Instead of the usual Rs2.5 deduction, a whopping Rs90 will be taken and given to the tax authority. The FBR recently put out lists identifying over 500,000 people who haven’t been filing their taxes. They’ve asked the Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA) and telecom companies to block their SIM cards. So far, they’ve already blocked around 11,500 SIM cards, and more blocks are expected soon.

Blocking SIM Cards

Telecom companies have been given until May 15 to block SIM cards of all the non-filers identified. This move comes after the FBR found millions of potential taxpayers who haven’t been meeting their tax obligations. Out of these, over half a million people were picked out for SIM card blocking based on factors like past income declarations and not filing taxes for 2023.

Targeting Potential Taxpayers

The Express Tribune previously reported that if the SIMs of non-filers aren’t blocked by May 15, the FBR might take legal action against the telecom companies. Sources say the FBR plans to discuss this matter further and may even take the telecom companies to court if they don’t comply with the Income Tax General Order (ITGO).

Initially, the telecom companies pushed back against the idea, arguing they were supposed to provide uninterrupted service to their customers unless specified otherwise in the law. However, They’ve changed their tune after talks with the FBR. So, with this new proposal, the FBR aims to ensure everyone chips in for the nation’s development, making sure tax obligations aren’t ignored.
