Boosting Infrastructure

Charging infrastructure is a critical focus, with standards for EV charging stations already drafted by the power ministry. Global EV leader BYD Group, which recently entered the Pakistani market, is partnering with local oil marketing companies to establish a network of 20 to 30 charging stations in its initial phase.

Currently, the Council of Islamic Ideology (CII), a body that advises on Islamic principles, is weighing in on the issue. According to the CII Chairman, VPNs are frequently used to access content that is immoral, blasphemous, or harmful to national integrity. However, netizens are wondering why there is a need to control what is being viewed by them. He emphasised that unregistered VPNs make it difficult to trace users, which allows them to ignore restrictions and remain unknown.

Why VPN Regulations Matters

The CII also pointed out that while VPNs have legitimate uses, those positive applications are rare in Pakistan. Instead, most users exploit VPN apps to access banned content and controversial materials. But beyond this, on a security front, the Interior Ministry is concerned about VPNs being exploited by terrorists. The officials have shared that VPN apps can be used to mask communications, facilitate illegal transactions, and access harmful content.

He announced that the council had reviewed and approved earlier recommendations on social media use. At a press conference following a council meeting on Wednesday. The members further acknowledged the need to encourage ethical and favourable online interactions.

VPNs and Their Role in Online Privacy

Virtual Private Networks or VPNs, are widely used to maintain online privacy and obtain access to prohibited websites. These technologies facilitate users to mask their IP addresses and secure their internet connections, allowing them to browse the internet anonymously and evade geographical limitations.

CII’s Stance on VPN Use from an Islamic Point of View

The chairman of the Council of Islamic Ideology declared that some of the ‘un-Islamic’ uses of VPNs include making statements against national security and engaging in character assassination. Dr Naeemi further added that if there are attempts to gain access to indecent or immoral sites, or incidents of religious blasphemy are being spread through it. This would make using it un-Islamic and against Sharia.

However, Dr Naeemi continued, that VPNs can be used constructively and positively. He mentioned that if VPNs are being used for educational purposes, as a means of communication, or to convey positive messages, then there is no harm in using them. He further added that if the VPN is registered, and is being used positively, then it is well within Islamic frameworks.

VPN usage has been boosted in Pakistan especially to access sites like X, previously known as Twitter, which has been banned since February.
