Govt Increases Petrol, Diesel Prices for Next Fortnight

The Federal Government of Pakistan has announced an increase in petrol and diesel prices. According to a notification issued late on December 31, the price of petrol has been raised by 56 paise per litre. The new price of petrol has been set at Rs252.66 per litre.

Similarly, the price of high-speed diesel has been increased by Rs2.96 per litre. The new price for high-speed diesel is now Rs258.34 per litre. These changes come as part of regular adjustments in fuel prices, influenced by international market trends and local economic conditions.

The government of Pakistan on December 15 announced new petrol and diesel prices. As per details, petrol prices remain stable at Rs252.10 per litre. High-speed diesel prices have decreased by Rs3.05 per litre, with the new price set at Rs255.38 per litre.

In addition, the price of kerosene has decreased by Rs3.32 per litre, with the new price set at Rs161.66 per litre. Light diesel oil prices have also decreased by Rs2.78 per litre, with the new price set at Rs148.95 per litre. The Ministry of Finance has issued a notification regarding the new prices, which will come into effect at 12 am tonight.

According to sources, the price of high-speed diesel has increased by Rs12.14 per litre since October 16. The price of petrol was risen by Rs5.07 per litre during the same period. The government could have reduced the levy to prevent the price hike, but the IMF program restrictions prevented it, sources revealed.

New Year Aerial Firing Injures 29 in Karachi

Celebratory New Year firing in the metropolis left 29 people injured, including two women, police said on Wednesday. The injured were transported to Civil Hospital, Jinnah Hospital and Abbasi Shaheed Hospital for treatment. Rescue sources said that stray bullets hit people in Liaquatabad, Gulshan-e-Iqbal, Shah Faisal Colony and Orangi Town.

Law enforcement took action, arresting 30 individuals involved in aerial firing. The Karachi police had earlier issued warnings, saying that anyone caught firing in the air would face charges of attempted murder.

In Lahore, meanwhile, several individuals were also arrested for violating laws under the guise of New Year celebrations, the police said. The crackdown followed incidents of aerial firing in various parts of Lahore.

DIG Operations conducted late-night visits to different areas of the city to oversee law enforcement efforts. In Shad Bagh, police apprehended 15 suspects involved in aerial firing and unruly behaviour, recovering weapons from their possession. Similarly, in Shafiqabad and Ichhra, suspects were taken into custody for participating in aerial firing and disruptive activities.

Celebrations

As the New Year arrived, spectacular fireworks displays lit up the skies of Karachi, Islamabad, Rohri and other cities. While some marked the occasion with resolutions and promises, others celebrated with energetic festivities. In Karachi, dazzling fireworks took place at Port Grand and the Governor House, where a 40-minute-long display captivated onlookers. Sindh Governor Kamran Khan Tessori claimed the event set a global fireworks record.

Rawalpindi and Lahore also joined the celebrations, with concerts and lively gatherings drawing crowds. In Islamabad, festivities continued in F-8 and private housing societies. While in Quetta, the arrival of the New Year was marked by fireworks, aerial firing, and special prayers in churches.

In Azad Kashmir, the New Year was welcomed with fireworks at Zero Point, Keran, along the Line of Control (LoC). A large number of locals and tourists attended the celebrations, which added a unique charm to the region. Meanwhile, in cities such as Hyderabad and Gujranwala, residents also celebrated with enthusiasm, offering prayers for prosperity and peace in the coming year.

WHO Urges China to Share More Covid-19 Data

China has defended its COVID-19 transparency after the World Health Organisation (WHO) called for more data and access to understand the origins of the pandemic. The disease first emerged in Wuhan in December 2020 and has since caused millions of deaths globally.

Responding to WHO’s statement on Monday, which called it a “moral and scientific imperative” for China to share more information, Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Mao Ning said China had made the “largest contribution to global origin tracing research.” She added, “Without holding anything back, we shared our prevention, control and treatment experience.”

Over the years, the WHO has criticised China for lacking transparency. The joint investigation in early 2021, conducted by WHO specialists and Chinese colleagues, favoured the hypothesis that the virus jumped from a bat to a human via an intermediary animal. However, WHO officials have not been able to return to China and continue asking for more data. Mao stated that “more and more clues” suggested COVID-19’s origins had a global scope and that China was “willing to continue working with various parties” to advance scientific origin tracing.

WHO Director-General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus warned that the world remains vulnerable to new pandemics. Despite lessons learned from COVID-19, countries face challenges in negotiating a treaty on pandemic prevention and response. Key issues include obligations to share pathogens and equitable access to vaccines. The treaty’s deadline is May 2025, as 194 members aim to strengthen global defences against future pandemics.

Rain and Snow Expected to Welcome the New Year_ Met Office

Met Office predicted rain with heavy snowfall over the hills in the western and upper parts of the country during the first week of January 2025. The weather system is likely to enter Pakistan on 1st January 2025 and may persist till 6th January.

Rain with heavy snowfall is expected in Gilgit-Baltistan and Kashmir from 1st to 6th January, while in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa from 1st to 5th January. Rain with heavy snowfall is also expected in Punjab and Islamabad from the 1st to the 6th of January 2025 with occasional gaps. However, light rain is expected in southern Punjab’s Multan, Dera Ghazi Khan, Layyah, Muzaffargarh, Taunsa Sharif, Khanewal, Sahiwal, Pakpattan, Okara and Bahawalnagar districts from 2nd to 5th January 2025.

Rain and snowfall over hills are also predicted in Balochistan’s Quetta, Ziarat, Chaman, Pishin, Qilla Abdullah, Qilla Saifullah, Chagi, Noushki, Kalat, Khuzdar, Harnai, Zhob and Musakhel from 1st to 4th January.

Cold and dry weather is expected in most parts of Sindh. However, light rain is expected in Dadu, Qamber-Shehdad Kot, Shaheed Benazirabad, Sukkur and Jacobabad on the 3rd and 4th of January. Cold wave conditions are likely to grip most parts of the country followed by the wet spell. Dense foggy conditions may develop in plains after the forecast period.

Govt Hajj Scheme Likely to be Abolished from 2026

Maulana Atta-ur-Rehman headed a meeting of the Senate Standing Committee on Religious Affairs on Tuesday. Dr. Zulfiqar Haider, the secretary of the Ministry of Religious Affairs, gave the committee members an update on the current Hajj plans. “The ministry plans to distance itself from the government’s direct involvement in Hajj management,” he said. According to Dr. Haider, Hajj arrangements may eventually be handled by commercial companies.

The Secretary warned private Hajj operators that their quotas would be cancelled if they did not drop their complaints from the courts. He highlighted if private operators meet the legal conditions, the government plans to turn over Hajj arrangements to them the following year.

Ongoing Concerns 

The Senate Standing Committee on Religious Affairs held a meeting headed by Maulana Atta-ur-Rehman to review ongoing difficulties concerning private Hajj operators. Without a formal agreement with the Ministry of Religious Affairs, private Hajj operators may not obtain their Hajj quotas, despite submitting advance payments to Saudi Arabia for Hajj arrangements.

Private operators have been instructed by the committee to complete their contracts with the Ministry of Religious Affairs as quickly as feasible. Additionally, the committee stressed that it is unlawful to send funds to Saudi Arabia without a contract. If this practice persists, the operators’ quotas will be revoked. Chairman Maulana Atta-ur-Rehman expressed concern about the country’s reputational damage if quotas are removed. Additionally, he issued a warning that the operators’ quotas might be transferred to nations like Afghanistan or India if they fail to address the problem.

The Secretary of the Ministry of Religious Affairs further emphasised that because they are legally obligated by Saudi Arabian policies, they cannot contest them. He called on private business owners to collaborate with the ministry to find a solution to the problem of fewer businesses.

Senator Dr Afnan Ullah went on to say that the government would be greatly embarrassed if the agreements were not completed quickly. Private Hajj operators have been given four days by the committee to address the issue. The federal cabinet has approved reducing the number of Hajj companies. Due to agreements with Saudi Arabia, the cabinet is not in a position to revise the Hajj policy.

The Impact of Norovirus in the US

Norovirus causes a big health burden in the United States each year, leading to:

  • 19–21 million cases of vomiting and diarrhoea
  • 109,000 hospitalisations for severe symptoms
  • 2.3 million outpatient visits for milder cases
  • 450,000 emergency visits, mostly involving young kids
  • 900 deaths, mainly in adults over 65

Outbreaks can happen almost anywhere—schools, hospitals, restaurants, and daycare centres. While cruise ships are often linked to norovirus in the media, they actually account for only 1% of cases.

Symptoms and How it Spreads

Norovirus symptoms can hit you out of nowhere and include:

  • Stomach cramps
  • Nausea
  • Vomiting

How to Prevent Norovirus

Stopping the spread of norovirus takes some effort. The best ways to protect yourself include:

  • Wash your hands well with soap and water—especially after using the bathroom, changing diapers, and before eating or cooking.
  • Avoid making food or caring for others when you’re sick.
  • Wash fruits and vegetables properly before eating them.
  • Cook shellfish thoroughly before serving.
  • Clean and disinfect surfaces exposed to vomit or diarrhoea.
  • While hand sanitisers can help, they don’t beat good old-fashioned soap and water when it comes to removing norovirus.

What to Do if You Get Sick

There’s no specific medicine or vaccine for norovirus. Antibiotics won’t help since it’s a virus, not a bacterial infection. The most important thing is to stay hydrated by drinking plenty of fluids. If your symptoms are severe, seek medical attention.

Currently, scientists are working on a vaccine, which could make a big difference in the future.

The Lahore administration has imposed a complete ban on fireworks and aerial displays on New Year’s night, citing the alarming levels of air pollution in the city. The Environment Protection Department issued a notification on Wednesday, announcing the ban on all types of fireworks and aerial displays.

Deputy Commissioner Lahore warned that strict action would be taken against anyone violating the ban. “We are working to control smog and reduce air pollution in the city, and we urge citizens to cooperate with us in this effort,” the deputy commissioner said.

The city administration has cited health and environmental protection as top priorities. The ban aims to reduce air pollution and protect public health, especially as the smog levels are peaking. Earlier, ahead of New Year’s Eve, AIG Karachi Javed Alam Odho issued a warning for the people of the port city who are planning aerial firing in celebration of the year 2025.

The police will register cases under the attempted murder section for aerial firing incidents that may occur on New Year’s Eve, AIG Odho warned Karachi people. Odho observed that last year, 31 individuals were injured due to aerial firing on New Year’s Eve in Karachi. AIG Karachi urged citizens to report such incidents to the police as they are ready to assist. He also advised people to refrain from aerial firing and celebrate the New Year peacefully and responsibly.

On a sombre Sunday at South Korea’s Muan International Airport, tragedy struck as a Jeju Air flight crashed while attempting to land, claiming 179 lives. Amid the devastation, a glimmer of hope emerged: two flight attendants, Lee (32) and Kwon (25), miraculously survived. Their escape was attributed to their position at the aircraft’s rear tail section—a location statistically regarded as the safest during crashes.

The Crash and Its Aftermath

The Jeju Aeroplane, a Boeing 737-800, was on its way from Bangkok to Muan when it failed to land properly, skidding off the runway and crashing into a fence. In the blink of an eye, the plane burst into flames. Preliminary investigation reports suggest a landing gear failure as the most probable cause and attempted a belly landing.

Lee and Kwon were the only two survivors rescued from the charred tail section. Both of them had severe injuries. Lee’s shoulder was broken, and his head was bruised while Kwon had an ankle fracture, scalp laceration, and severe abdominal pain. Hospital authorities reported that their lives were not in any danger.

Why the Tail Section?

A 2015 survey conducted by TIME Magazine provides evidence that back seats are even safer in an aeroplane. The publication found out that the chances of death when hitting any plane are 38% among passengers at the back, 39% in the middle and 32% at the rear. Its tail section usually has less impact with the ground on crashing, therefore slightly improving the survival chances.

Survivor Accounts

Both survivors remain in a daze, hardly remembering what transpired. Lee kept asking himself repeatedly, “What happened? Why am I here?” This sums up the bewilderment at surviving such a disaster. The two accounts, although hazy, are vital leads for investigators who want to make sense of what happened and the order of events that culminated in the crash.

A Greater Tragedy

Among those killed in the crash were people aged 78 years to a three-year-old child. Also, among those who died included two nationals from Thailand. Investigations into the matter are ongoing while hope and determination in surviving have been witnessed. The surviving act gives the two survivors a sense of purpose toward life: unpredictable as it could be and in an ongoing course to increase air safety.
