Honouring Karachi's Heroes: The "Tamgha-e-Karachi" Ceremony

On January 5, Karachi recognised its uncelebrated heroes with the “Tamgha-e-Karachi” awards. The event aimed at recognising those individuals and families who have gone the extra mile to serve the city. Karachi Metropolitan Corporation (KMC) organised the function.

A Special Event at Khaliq Dina Hall

The ceremony, held at the historic Khaliq Dina Hall, was graced by Mayor Karachi Barrister Murtaza Wahab and Deputy Mayor Salman Abdullah Murad. This heartfelt tribute celebrates the selfless contributions of KMC employees and their families. Among those honoured were martyrs from the City Warden and Fire Brigade services, as well as notable figures like artist Mehtab Ali, educationist Darya Qazi, social worker Fatima Majeed, and writer Saima Saleem.

Families of martyrs who gave their lives protecting Karachi’s citizens were also recognised, reminding everyone of the sacrifices made for public safety.

Words of Gratitude from the Mayor

The Mayor of Karachi, Murtaza Wahab, termed the honourees as “real heroes,” adding that they sacrificed their lives for the people of Karachi. “Their selflessness ensures the safety and progress of our city,” he said.

He also applauded the artists and educators who have uplifted Karachi’s image internationally, showing the city’s more vibrant side.

Honourees Receive Cash and Gold Medals

Every awardee was gifted a pure gold and silver medal and endowed with a cash prize of Rs500000. The gesture symbolised not only recognition but also gratitude for their hard work and sacrifice.

A New Tradition for Karachi

Mayor Wahab also announced that the “Tamgha-e-Karachi” ceremony will now take place every year on January 5. This tradition will continue to shine a spotlight on the unsung heroes who make Karachi a safer, brighter, and better place.

This occasion was not just about an awards ceremony but it was a much-needed moment to celebrate the courageous, selfless, and committed efforts of people. With the awards taking place, citizens were reminded of the innumerable contributions made by those people who worked every day from dawn to dusk-without recognition.

With the players’ retention lists locked in ahead of the Players Draft on January 11, franchises have made some bold calls. Familiar faces, fresh combinations, and unexpected releases—this season promises plenty of surprises.

Each team could retain up to eight players, and while some maxed out their quota, others kept their options open. Let’s dive into the action-packed retention lists and see what’s in store!

Islamabad United

The three-time PSL winners are sticking to their proven stars. Captain Shadab Khan and pacer Naseem Shah headline the Platinum picks.

Pakistan’s IT sector is under immense strain as slow Internet speeds and frequent disruptions cost the country $1.62 billion in 2024, the highest global economic loss from Internet outages, according to Top10VPN.com. A staggering 9,735 hours of disruptions affected over 82.9 million users, with political events cited as the primary cause.

The Pakistan Software Houses Association (P@SHA) revealed that these challenges could lead to annual IT sector losses of $150 million, threatening the government’s $15 billion export target. P@SHA Chairman Sajjad Mustafa Syed emphasised the urgency of rolling out 5G, “Pakistan suffers a loss of more than one million dollars per hour on account of Internet shutdowns.”

Freelancers, who represent over 2.37 million of the workforce, are also hit hard. PAFLA President Tufail Ahmed Khan highlighted the importance of Internet-friendly policies and praised the National Fiberisation Policy aimed at improving broadband. He stressed that better connectivity could boost remittances and reduce dependency on government jobs.

Efforts by the PTA to address disruptions include joining the 2Africa submarine cable system and exploring satellite Internet via Starlink. Industry leaders are calling for immediate action to safeguard Pakistan’s IT growth and improve its global reputation.

Karachi is experiencing a cold wave as the mercury dropped to 9°C. The Pakistan Meteorological Department (PMD) predicts temperatures to fall further to 7-9°C within the next 24 hours. Winds are blowing at 5 km/h from the northeast, with a humidity level of 63%.

The PMD attributed Karachi’s chill to the shuddering cold in Quetta, where the temperature plummeted to -7°C. The mountainous regions of Balochistan also faced extreme cold, with Kalat recording -10°C and Ziarat -9°C.

Adding to the cold spell, Karachi received its first winter rain on January 4, with light showers reported in various areas. The PMD earlier warned that the westerly winds causing the wet spell could intensify the prevailing cold conditions.

While most districts of Balochistan are expected to remain cold and dry, the weather in the province’s mountainous areas is likely to be extremely cold. Karachiites are advised to brace for more chilly days ahead.

A huge winter storm is relentlessly crossing America, bringing a swat of hazardous snow and ice. The storm stretches more than 2400 km across Kansas and the East Coast, affecting millions and causing havoc for flights, conveyance, and daily living.

Blizzard Warnings and Hazardous Conditions

The National Weather Service (NWS) has announced a blizzard warning for Kansas and Missouri, extending winter storm and ice warnings straight to Washington, D.C. Early Sunday, Kansas began experiencing freezing rain, sleet, and snow. However, the worst is yet to come as forecasters expect heavy snow and wind gusts of more than 64 km/h before it all ends.

Kansas could see over 15 inches of snow, the heaviest in a decade, making roads nearly impossible to drive on. Snow in Northeast Missouri to the Central Appalachians is expected to get 8 to 14 inches. Washington, D.C., will brace for up to 10 inches of overnight snow by Monday.

Airports and Travel Disruptions

Travel has already been severely impacted. Kansas City International Airport shut down operations on Saturday, resuming later after treating runways. With wind chills plunging temperatures to as low as -18°C, the storm is expected to cause delays and cancellations at airports from Kansas to New Jersey.

Waiter Arrested in Connection with Liam Payne’s Death

A waiter implicated in the death of pop star Liam Payne has been taken into custody, according to reports from Argentinian media. Braian Paiz, 24, is among five individuals charged in connection with Payne’s death on Monday, December 30, and was summoned to appear in court.

The 31-year-old singer passed away on October 16,2024, after falling from the third-floor balcony of his room at the CasaSur Palermo hotel in Buenos Aires. Paiz, along with hotel employee Ezequiel Pereyra, faces charges of supplying drugs on two occasions, an offense that carries a maximum sentence of 15 years.

In an interview with a local news channel, Paiz admitted to using drugs, including cocaine, with Payne but maintained that he neither supplied the drugs nor accepted money for them.

Argentinian media outlets, as cited by Sky News, reported that Paiz was arrested at his residence in Ingeniero Budge on Friday, January 3. Additionally, police reportedly raided the home of Pereyra, 21, but he was not found at the location.

Paiz’s lawyer, Fernando Madeo Facente, earlier told the BBC that he advised his client not to surrender following the charges. Facente argued that Paiz did not pose a flight risk, had not obstructed the investigation, and therefore pre-trial detention was unwarranted.

Among others charged is Argentinian businessman Rogelio Nores, also known as “Roger.” Nores has stated that he left the CasaSur hotel 40 minutes before Payne’s death and has denied any involvement in the incident.

In a follow-up post, Jamali claimed that Pakistan had approved Starlink’s entry and urged Musk to expedite the launch, stressing the potential benefits of providing millions of people with better connectivity, education, and opportunities.

Earlier, Minister of State for IT Shaza Fatima Khawaja confirmed that Pakistan is in negotiations with Elon Musk’s Starlink to bring satellite internet services to the country. World’s Oldest Person, Tomiko Itooka, Dies at 116

The world’s oldest person, Japanese woman Tomiko Itooka, has died at the age of 116, the city of Ashiya where she lived announced on Saturday. Itooka, who had four children and five grandchildren, died on December 29 at a nursing home where she resided since 2019, the southern city’s mayor said in a statement.

She was born on May 23, 1908 in the commercial hub of Osaka, near Ashiya – four months before the Ford Model T automobile was launched in the United States. Itooka was recognised as the oldest person in the world after the August 2024 death of Spain’s Maria Branyas Morera at age 117.

“Ms Itooka gave us courage and hope through her long life,” Ashiya’s 27-year-old mayor Ryosuke Takashima said in the statement. “We thank her for it.” Itooka, who was one of three siblings, lived through world wars and pandemics as well as technological breakthroughs.

As a student, she played volleyball. In her older age, Itooka enjoyed bananas and Calpis, a milky soft drink popular in Japan, according to the mayor’s statement.

Women typically enjoy longevity in Japan, but the country is facing a worsening demographic crisis as its expanding elderly population leads to soaring medical and welfare costs, with a shrinking labour force to pay for it. As of September, Japan counted more than 95,000 people who were 100 or older – 88 percent of whom were women. Of the country’s 124 million people, nearly a third are 65 or older.

After Itooka’s death, the world’s oldest person is now 116-year-old Brazilian nun Inah Canabarro Lucas, who was born on June 8, 1908, according to the US Gerontological Research Group and LongeviQuest.

PCB Sends Saim Ayub to London for Urgent Medical Treatment

Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) Chairman Mohsin Naqvi announced on Sunday that star batter Saim Ayub will be flown to London for immediate medical treatment following consultations with top medical experts.

The move aims to ensure a thorough diagnosis and effective treatment of Ayub’s injury. Naqvi personally contacted Ayub to check on his condition and extended his heartfelt wishes for a swift recovery.

He expressed the importance of providing necessary care, emphasising that Ayub will be examined by renowned orthopaedic specialists in London. An appointment has already been arranged at one of the leading hospitals to ensure the best possible treatment for the young cricketer.

Dr Mamreze, who has been overseeing the left-handed batter’s treatment in Pakistan, sent the cricketer’s medical reports to London for further evaluation. Naqvi praised his dedication and reiterated that the PCB would provide all the necessary resources to support Ayub’s recovery.

“Saim Ayub is a stylish and outstanding batter, and an asset to Pakistan cricket,” Naqvi said. “We are doing everything possible to ensure his full recovery. He will be sent on the next available flight from Cape Town to London, with Assistant Coach Azhar Mahmood accompanying him to ensure his well-being,” he added.

The injury occurred during fielding on the opening day of the second men’s cricket Test against South Africa at Newlands on Friday. While attempting to retrieve the ball, Ayub lost his balance and stumbled backward, resulting in the injury.

An MRI conducted on Friday afternoon confirmed the fracture, leading to his ankle being immobilised with a medical moon boot. As a result, he has been sidelined from cricket for at least six weeks.

Despite the setback, Naqvi expressed optimism that the opening batter would recover in time for the upcoming Champions Trophy in Pakistan. “The PCB will spare no effort in utilising all necessary resources to aid in his treatment and rehabilitation,” Naqvi assured.

Popular streaming platform Netflix is facing criticism for the use of AI while promoting one of their upcoming shows. After revealing the poster for a Korean series Chef & My Fridge or Please Take Care of My Refrigerator, fans quickly noticed the issue. It is far from the first time that Netflix has received criticism for their unstated use of AI for promotional content.

Earlier in November, they removed a poster of the hit animated series Arcane after it was noted that the image had been expanded using generative AI. From the world of the game League of Legends, owned by Riot Games, the series has been applauded globally for its futuristic art.

The brand lead for Riot Games took to social media to express their distaste, stating it was “disrespectful to the incredible artists who worked on the show.” Unlike the previous incident, however, fans have pointed out that the poster for Chef & My Fridge seems to be completely AI generated. The series originally aired from 2014 to 2019, featuring famed guests and chefs. The latest season is set to premiere on Netflix on January 12.

Certain details like the handles of the fridge being on the inside, uneven wall tiles, random item placement and more seem to be the primary culprits in arousing suspicion. Despite the controversy, Netflix has not yet responded to the criticism.

Mysterious Giant Metallic Ring Falls in Kenya

A large metallic ring suspected to be debris from space crashed in southern Kenya’s Mukuku village on Monday, the country’s space agency said. Villagers discovered the “red and hot” ring suspected to be rocket parts at about 3 pm local time on 30 December, the Kenyan Space Agency said, adding that it “secured the area and retrieved the debris“.

“The agency wishes to clarify that the object, a metallic ring measuring 2.5 metres in diameter and weighing about 500kg, is a fragment of a space object,” the agency said in a statement. Rocket debris is designed to burn up during re-entry into the earth’s atmosphere or to fall over unoccupied areas like the oceans.

In a dramatic turn of events earlier today, police officers were deployed outside former President Yoon’s residence in Seoul, preparing to execute an arrest warrant. However, the mission faced strong resistance, highlighting the deep divisions surrounding Yoon’s case.

Protesters Rally to Shield Yoon

Before dawn, a large group of Yoon’s supporters gathered near his residence, determined to block his arrest. The scene grew tense as the pro-Yoon crowd, described as a “human wall” of about 200 people, physically obstructed investigators.

Police Reach the Compound but Face Security Blockade

Around 10:00 AM local time, the arrest team managed to get past a military unit stationed inside Yoon’s compound. However, they were soon stopped by his presidential security service. The standoff between law enforcement and Yoon’s security detail created an hours-long impasse.

Arrest Attempt Called Off

After several hours, investigators decided to withdraw. They described the situation as a “sustained standoff” and said the arrest was “practically impossible.” The presence of Yoon’s supporters and the unyielding security forces left police unable to proceed further.

Once again, China is experiencing a new viral outbreak. This time, however, the virus is Human Metapneumovirus (HMPV), which travels fast and manifests flu-like symptoms that resemble COVID-19.

Hospitals Are Struggling to Keep Up

Hospitals in China are completely overwhelmed by multiple viruses, including Influenza A, Mycoplasma pneumoniae, COVID-19, and HMPV, all of which are currently circulating in the country. Most of the cases being reported are children, suffering from pneumonia and what is referred to as “white lung.”

Social Media Fuels Concerns

Social media posts claim that hospitals and even crematories are under pressure. One post on X stated, “China is facing a surge in multiple viruses, including Influenza A, HMPV, Mycoplasma pneumoniae, and Covid-19, overwhelming hospitals and crematoriums.” While there are rumours of a state of emergency, officials have not confirmed this.

Respiratory Illnesses Rise in Winter

According to the experts, respiratory diseases such as HMPV and rhinovirus are rampant during the winter spring seasons. Kan Biao, a health officer, says that the total number of cases this year is likely to be less than that of last year. However, the cases of HMPV are increasing, especially among children under 14 years, in the northern regions.

No Vaccine for HMPV Yet

In contrast with COVID-19, there is no known vaccine against HMPV. Many people do not realise they have HMPV because its symptoms usually resemble those of a cold. A respiratory expert in Shanghai advised against taking antiviral drugs indiscriminately to retain their proper usage.

Stay Cautious During the Flu Season

The situation highlights the need for vigilance during the flu season. Although officials are keeping a close eye on the outbreak, people are encouraged to wear a mask and maintain their hygiene to prevent getting infected.

China’s healthcare system is bracing for what could be a challenging winter, but experts hope the situation can be managed better than past outbreaks.

Weekly Inflation Rises by 3.97% YoY: PBS

The Pakistan Bureau of Statistics (PBS) reported a 3.97% year-on-year increase in weekly inflation, measured by the Sensitive Price Indicator (SPI), for the week ending January 2. On a week-on-week basis, however, inflation saw a slight decline of 0.07% for combined consumption groups.

Sugar prices increased for the fifth consecutive week, with a rise of Rs1.31 per kilogram. Meanwhile, the prices of 18 essential items, including chicken (up by Rs42.07/kg), onions (up by Rs6.37/kg), bananas (up by Rs3/dozen) and ghee (up by Rs7.73 for 2.5 kg tin), also surged.

Conversely, prices of 10 commodities dropped, offering some relief. Tomatoes led the decline, falling by Rs34.41/kg, followed by potatoes (down by Rs6.32/kg). Eggs, garlic and wheat flour prices also decreased during the week.
