Devastating Earthquake Strikes Tibet, Leaves Dozens Dead

At least 53 died and about 62 people were injured as a strong earthquake hit Tibet’s Shigatse city early Tuesday morning. The earthquake measuring 7.1 on the Richter scale shook the ground at 09:00 hours local time (01:00 GMT), at a depth of 10 kilometres. The region shook with several aftershocks following the initial tremor.

Impact on Shigatse, Tibet’s Holy City

Shigatse was one of the most devastated cities. This city was the traditional seat of the Panchen Lama and is thus spiritually important in Tibetan Buddhism. More than a thousand houses were damaged and social media posts revealed photos of buildings reduced to rubble.

A hotel resident in Shigatse described being jolted awake by violent shaking. “It felt like even the bed was being lifted,” he shared, adding that helicopters circled above shortly after.

Epicenter Near Mount Everest Base

The epicentre was near Tingri County, which is a passage for climbers going to Mount Everest. The authorities cancelled all sightseeing tours in the area and ushered tourists to safety outdoors.

Rescue teams, assisted by drones and the Chinese Air Force, were dispatched to the site of the disaster where freezing temperatures have made matters worse. Furthermore, both water and electricity remain cut in the affected areas.

Tremors Felt in Nepal and India

In addition, the earthquake’s tremors reached Nepal and some parts of India. However, the region of Namche, near Mount Everest, reported no casualties or damages from the earthquake.

Regions bordering on the fault lines between the Indian and Eurasian tectonic plates have been and are still, seismically active. So much so, that a mega-earthquake, which occurred in Nepal in 2015, reportedly claimed the lives of almost 9,000 people.

Government Response and Safety Precautions

All efforts must therefore be mobilised to minimise casualties, according to Chinese President Xi Jinping. In all likelihood, there would be a smaller aftershock, but further, he did not expect more substantial ones, said Jiang Haikun, a researcher at the China Earthquake Networks Center.

Residents and tourists in the area should always be careful as strong aftershocks still continue to shake the region.

This earthquake serves as a sobering reminder of the region’s vulnerability to seismic activity. As rescue efforts continue, the focus remains on saving lives and rebuilding communities.

A California surfer, Alessandro “Alo” Slebir, 23, may have made history by riding one of the tallest waves ever recorded. The wave, surfed on December 23 at Mavericks near Half Moon Bay, is estimated to be an incredible 108 feet high. If verified, this ride will break the current record of 86 feet set by Sebastian Steudtner in 2020 off the coast of Portugal.

Slebir shared his experience with KSBW-TV, describing the challenge of riding such a towering wave. “When you’re riding waves that big, the speed is intense—around 30 to 50 miles per hour. This wave was so gigantic, that .it was pulling a tremendous amount of water back under my board. The friction from the water was unlike anything I’ve ever felt before. It was surreal,” he said.

Mavericks, a famous big-wave surfing destination, is known for its colossal waves during winter swells. On December 23, conditions were perfect for massive swells, attracting surfing enthusiasts. Slebir’s daring ride has gone viral on social media, sparking excitement in the surfing community.

Official verification from Guinness World Records and the World Surf League is awaited to confirm if this wave sets a new world record. Until then, Slebir’s feat is already being celebrated as one of the most remarkable moments in surfing history.

What is HMPV Virus and What are its Symptoms?

HMPV or Human Metapneumovirus has recently gained attention worldwide after an outbreak reported in China. Two cases of HMP have also been reported in Karnataka, India, both being infants.

However Chinese health officials have not confirmed that the recent surge in hospital cases is due to HMPV. In fact, recent reports from China’s Centre for Disease Control and Prevention have suggested that the increased hospitalisation might actually be due to influence. However, less public knowledge about HMPV and the worry about a potential pandemic has risen in the US and the world. Though experts say there isn’t a need for alarm, we must understand the HMPV to put our concerns to rest.

What is HMPV?

HMPV is a common respiratory virus that typically causes mild flu-like symptoms. It can cause both upper and lower respiratory disease in people of all ages. Young children, specifically infants, people of old age and those with a weakened immune system are the most at risk.

The Virus was first discovered in 2001, belonging to the Paramyxoviridae family and is closely linked to Respiratory Syncytial Virus (RSV). Although HMPV has recently come to light, the virus peaks every year between November and May and accounts for 4-16% of acute respiratory infections globally While most adults can develop immunity to the virus through previous exposure, it has been more severe in some cases.

HMPV Symptoms

HMPV symptoms typically depend on the person’s age, health and immune system. In most cases, the following symptoms are seen most commonly:

Cough
Fever
Runny nose and nasal congestion
Sore Throat

In severe cases, the symptoms may look like this:

Difficulty breathing
Wheezing
Hoarseness
Pneumonia
Aggravation of asthma in adults

These more severe symptoms of respiratory illness can be seen in infants, the elderly and those with weak immune systems.

Who is at Risk?

Everyone can contract HMPV but it is most concerning for young children, the elderly and individuals with compromised immune systems. In India, the two cases reported were both of infants because children under the age of five are particularly vulnerable, with more cases progressing to pneumonia. Those with underlying health conditions may also experience much more severe symptoms than the rest.

Prevention

HMPV spreads in ways similar to any respiratory virus such as the common cold. Transmission occurs mostly through respiratory droplets from infected individuals or contact with contaminated surfaces. To prevent the transmission, good hygiene is essential, including handwashing with soap and water.

Furthermore, covering the mouth when sneezing and coughing, wearing a mask and avoiding going in public when infected with flu-like symptoms are also important preventative measures.

Treatment

At the moment, no medication or vaccine has been developed to treat HMPV. Treatment depends on the severity of the infection and mild cases are usually treated with over-the-counter medicines. Patients are also advised to stay hydrated and eat what strengthens their immune system.

If the condition is severe, the patient may be advised to be admitted to the hospital and given oxygen therapy. Early medication is key to managing HMPV in most cases.

Is HMPV Worse than COVID-19?

Experts say that the outbreak of HMPV isn’t as bad as that of COVID since it’s not responsible for as many cases. According to the latest data from the CDC, HMPV accounts for less than 2% of weekly positive tests. For a disease to be considered widespread, it needs to be above 10% of positive cases.

Moreover, the difference between the two diseases lies in the underlying virus. COVID-19 has a broader spectrum of symptoms, such as loss of taste and smell and even blood clotting in severe cases. No such symptoms are seen in HMPV.

Squid Game Creator Hwang Expects No Awards for Season 2

Amid the award season, the Squid Game maker Hwang Dong Hyuk says he has no expectations that season two would win any trophy. His reaction came after the series was nominated at the 2025 Golden Globes. “To be honest, I didn’t have any expectations for awards regarding Season 2 when I decided to divide it into two parts—Seasons 2 and 3,” he shared.

“Since the story isn’t complete and the message I wanted to convey hasn’t been fully revealed, I thought it would be difficult to win an award in this state,” the filmmaker told The Hollywood Reporter.

“To receive such recognition, the story needs to be delivered in its entirety, and that hasn’t happened yet. So, I wasn’t expecting anything at all,” the director added. In other news, Hwang also shared the expected release of season three. “I probably expect that to launch around summer or fall next year,” he told Variety. He also previously told Reuters that the upcoming season is also in post-production. Netflix also confirmed that season three will arrive in 2025.

Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) Chairman Mohsin Naqvi confirmed that the ongoing upgrade of the iconic Gaddafi Stadium will be completed by January 25. A grand inauguration is scheduled for January 27.

Mr Naqvi during a media interaction expressed optimism regarding the completion of the stadium’s upgradation by 25 January. He also shared the exciting news of the official inauguration scheduled for January 27, an event that will feature several prominent personalities.

Addressing the national cricket team’s performance on the ongoing tour of South Africa, Naqvi acknowledged the team’s struggles after its defeat in the first Test. He also talked about their follow-on in the second.

Despite the challenges, he stressed that both victory and defeat are integral parts of the game. “The team is fighting, and this is what matters the most,” Naqvi said. In response to a question about rising concerns regarding young opener Saim Ayub’s treatment, Naqvi assured that the PCB would not compromise on his medical care.

Saim, who has been a bright prospect for the national team, will be leaving for London on Sunday morning, accompanied by assistant coach Azhar Mahmood. There, Saim will receive treatment from a renowned sports doctor. “Saim Ayub is an asset to Pakistan, and we are committed to his swift recovery,” Naqvi emphasised.

The Brutalist secured the award for Best Motion Picture – Drama. Directed by Brady Corbet, this film depicted a view into the life of a Hungarian architect in post-World War II America. Actor Adrien Brody’s portrayal in the film was impeccable. His performance earned him the Best Actor in a Motion Picture – Drama award. Actress Fernanda Torres received the Best Actress award for her compelling performance in “I’m Still Here.” Walter Salles directs, telling the true story of Eunice Paiva. The film captures her journey as she navigates a tough life after her family faces a crisis during Brazil’s 1971 military dictatorship.

In the Musical or Comedy category, Emilia Pérez won the Best Motion Picture. Jacques Audiard directs the film, which tells the story of a transgender former Mexican cartel leader. Karla Sofía Gascón’s portrayal of the titular character was noteworthy. This film in particular won 2 awards. Their victory of Best Non-English Motion Picture highlighted its international acclaim.

In Bengaluru, two instances of Human Metapneumovirus (HMPV) have arisen, igniting worries concerning the spread of this respiratory virus. One patient is an eight-month-old infant under treatment at a private hospital. The two cases have been reported at the Baptist Hospital in North Bengaluru, and both do not have any history of international travel. The Karnataka Health Department confirmed their findings, stating that the child’s medical tests were positive for HMPV.

Union Health Ministry Confirms Reports

The Ministry of Health in the Union affirmed that the cases emerged from a credible private hospital. Officials said they don’t believe their tests to be inaccurate anyway. Still, it attracts ambiguity because there has been no specification of the strain yet as no particular data has been provided about the variant detected in China. The government also assured that it is observing the situation to prepare for anything that happens.

Understanding HMPV and Its Symptoms

HMPV, which stands for human metapneumovirus, is a respiratory virus that has the potential to affect every class of people but is mostly severe in the very young, the elderly, and the immunocompromised. Symptoms generally appear three days to ten days after infection and commonly replicate the flu-like symptoms- cough, sore throat, runny nose, and difficulty breathing. More serious cases can progress to pneumonia or bronchitis and require hospitalisation.

Global Concerns Over HMPV and China’s Outbreak

An ongoing outburst of HMPV in China has drawn attention from the rest of the world. It has been clarified by the Ministry of Health in India that such spikes in respiratory diseases occur regularly during flu season. Reports from China indicate that the current surge is due to Influenza, Respiratory Syncytial Virus (RSV), and HMPV. The situation, however, is quite manageable in India and not too peculiar for the time of the year.

India’s Preparedness and State-Level Advisories

Now the Indian government has heightened monitoring for the reports. It has also approached the WHO for timely updates on the China outbreak. States like Delhi and Kerala have released guidelines to control the virus. Delhi mandates strict isolation of suspicious cases and prepares hospitals to stock up on essential medicines like paracetamol, bronchodilators, and oxygen for the management of severe cases.

Health Minister Veena George asked all pregnant women, senior citizens and people suffering from respiratory symptoms to wear masks. The Minister assured the public that there was no need to panic, but advised them to be careful. Andhra Pradesh’s health officials have made similar calls on the public to maintain hygiene by washing their hands more frequently and covering up their mouths while sneezing or coughing.

No Specific Treatment or Vaccine for HMPV

At this time, there is no antiviral treatment or vaccine for HMPV. Management of the disease mostly involves symptomatic treatment. Government hospitals are ready to take on cases, especially within vulnerable populations such as children and elders. Isolation is also recommended among people with respiratory symptoms, as given by authorities, in an attempt to limit further spread.

The Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR) has announced plans to increase laboratory capacity for HMPV testing across the country.
