Last October, the FIA Immigration team arrested two passengers at Karachi’s Jinnah International Airport for attempting to travel with fake documents. One passenger was carrying a counterfeit Iraqi visa, while another had a fraudulent Cuban visa.

Thai authorities have warned both applicants and travel agents, who submit forged documents, of severe consequences, reinforcing the importance of adhering to legal travel protocols. The SED is introducing four new subject groups for ninth-grade students. These include health sciences, agriculture, information technology (IT) and entrepreneurship. Students can choose one group at the start of ninth grade and continue with it throughout matriculation. The goal is to align the curriculum with international standards and offer practical, career-focused education.

SED Secretary Khalid Naeem Wattoo shared in an interview, “We have introduced four new groups: agriculture, IT, fashion designing and health sciences. Students will also be imparted practical education, with 35 marks allocated for theory and 40 for practicals.”

Training Existing Teachers

The department will not hire new teachers for these subjects. Instead, existing teachers will receive training for the new curriculum. Mr. Wattoo explained, “We will train our current staff to meet the demands of these new subjects.” He added that the department already employs engineers and computer teachers, making this transition feasible.

Maintaining the Current Examination Framework

The total marks for matriculation exams will remain at 1,100, as confirmed by the SED. The new subjects will be integrated into the current framework without altering the overall structure.

Expert Opinions on the Change

Educationist Rana Liaqat expressed his support for these changes. He believes the new groups will bring much-needed diversity to the curriculum. However, he emphasised the importance of upgrading science and IT labs in schools.

“The government should also provide facilities for upgrading the science and IT laboratories in schools to benefit the students,” he said. He also mentioned that many existing labs are non-operational, depriving students of practical learning opportunities.

Mr. Liaqat further suggested appointing specialised teachers for agriculture, fashion design and textile groups. He advised the government to review the previous administration’s ‘Tech groups’ policy and ensure the new strategy delivers results.

Trump Announces $500 Billion AI Infrastructure Investment

President of the United States, Donald Trump made an important announcement on Tuesday regarding private sector investment of up to $500 billion to fund framework for the artificial intelligence. Trump said that Open AI, Softbank and Oracle are collaborating on a joint venture called Stargate. According to him, it will establish data centres and generate more than 100,000 employment opportunities in the United States.

These companies, along with other equity backers of Stargate, have committed approximately $100 billion for fast deployment, with the remaining investment which is expected over the next four years. The SoftBank CEO Masayoshi Son, OpenAI CEO Sam Altman and Oracle Chairman Larry Ellison sat down with Trump at the White House for the launch.

The first of the project’s data centres are already under construction in Texas, with plans to build 20 centres, each half a million square feet. Ellison stated that the project could also power AI that analyses electronic health records, helping doctors care for their patients.

The executives regarded Trump for making it possible. The OpenAI CEO added, “For AGI to get built here, we wouldn’t be able to do this without you, Mr. President.”

In March 2024, The Information, a technology news website, reported that OpenAI and Microsoft were making efforts on plans for a $100 billion data centre project that would include an artificial intelligence supercomputer also called “Stargate” set to launch in 2028.

In a breathtaking celestial event, six planets – Venus, Jupiter, Mars, Saturn, Neptune and Uranus, are likely to grace the night sky at the end of January, according to the Space and Upper Atmosphere Research Commission (SUPARCO).

In a statement, a SUPARCO spokesperson said people will be able to witness the “spectacular planetary parade” next week. Venus, Jupiter, Mars and Saturn would be visible to the naked eye, the spokesperson said, adding that Neptune and Uranus, however, can be seen using a telescope.

In another event, the official said that a “rare seven-planet parade” will begin in late February. The planets will appear in a straight line from Earth’s perspective, creating a stunning view, the spokesperson added. “Though millions of miles apart, the planets seem to march together across the heavens,” the SUPARCO official added. On the other hand, social media is flooded with posts and videos claiming that the upcoming planetary alignment on January 25 happens “once in 396 billion years.”

However, planetary alignments are not something out of the ordinary, nor are they irregular or a weird phenomenon. But they are indeed a spectacular sight, according to Forbes.

76 People Killed in Massive Fire at Turkish Ski Resort Hotel

At least 76 were confirmed dead in a massive fire that erupted at a ski resort in Northern Turkey, Kartalkaya. The Grand Kartel Hotel is one of the most prominent ski resorts in the area. It was packed with families during winter when housed flames broke out at around 3:30 am.

Interior Minister Ali Yerlikaya confirmed that the figure increased from 66 to 76. In addition, he mentioned that out of the 76 victims, 52 have so far been identified. Forensic experts have been working to identify the rest. Most of the bodies of the victims have been returned to their families, added the minister.

The accident happened in season for the ski hotel, which is situated at 2000 meters above sea level and is almost full in the two-week winter holiday that commenced last Friday. After the incident, Yerlikaya further reported that 238 guests were in the hotel. In addition, 51 people were reported injured.

Health Minister Kemal Memisoglu declared that 17 of the injured were discharged while 34 are still inside the hospital, one of whom is in intensive care. In addition, Yerlikaya confirmed that the number of people arrested in connection with the blaze has risen from an earlier four to nine. Investigators are looking into the cause of the fire and who could’ve been responsible.

“Our pain is great,” said President Recep Tayyip Erdogan as he announced a national day of mourning on Wednesday and promised that those who are responsible would be “held to account.”

Gaddafi Stadium’s Capacity Increased to 35,000 for Global Event

The Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) has assured that preparations for the Champions Trophy are on track, with upgraded venues in Lahore, Karachi and Rawalpindi set to meet international standards. This eight-team, 50-over event marks the first global cricket tournament in Pakistan in 28 years, a milestone in the nation’s cricket revival since the 2009 Sri Lanka team attack.

Lahore’s Gaddafi Stadium, now Pakistan’s largest cricket venue with a capacity of 35,000, has undergone extensive renovations. “We are on track to complete the renovations and upgrades at Gaddafi Stadium,” said PCB spokesperson Sami ul Hasan. “The venue is expected to be handed over to us by the end of the month. We are confident that Gaddafi Stadium will be fully operational and ready to host the Champions Trophy match between Australia and England on February 22.”

India, due to ongoing tensions, will play all its matches in Dubai. Lahore and Karachi will also host a tri-nation series involving New Zealand and South Africa next month as a final test for the Champions Trophy venues.
