At last, the legal system has given justice for Pakistan’s cherished adolescent TikTok celebrity. An Islamabad sessions court sentenced Umar Hayat to death on May 19, 2026, for the savage murder of 17-year-old Sana Yousaf. The historic decision provides closure to a tragic case that has captivated the country for almost a year.

Additional District and Sessions Judge Muhammad Afzal Majoka delivered the final decision, demonstrating that violence against women would face the ultimate legal punishment.

The Court’s Decision: A Detailed Analysis

The court did not hold back in punishing the offender. For his string of offences, Umar Hayat was sentenced several times under the Pakistan Penal Code (PPC). This is precisely how the judge decided:

  • The Death Sentence: Under Section 302(b), the court condemned Hayat to death for deliberate murder (qatl-i-amd). But for this punishment to be finally confirmed, the Islamabad High Court still needs to weigh in.
  • Substantial Financial Rewards: Hayat was sentenced by the judge to pay Sana’s grieving family PKR 2.5 million. Should he not pay, he would spend another six months in jail.
  • Robbery Conviction: Under Section 392, Hayat was sentenced to 10 years of rigorous imprisonment and a Rs 200,000 fine for stealing Sana’s phone after the murder.
  • Defamation and Stolen Goods: The court added another 10 years for defamation under Section 499, plus one year of rigorous imprisonment under Section 411 for handling stolen property.

The Sad History: Rejection Led to Death

With more than a million followers spread over Instagram and TikTok, Sana Yousaf was a rising star. She brought happiness by posting stuff about fashion, lifestyle, and skincare. Additionally, she boldly leveraged her large platform to support traditional Chitrali culture and push for girls’ education.

Unfortunately, her internet fame led to a dangerous, one-sided fixation. Developing a violent infatuation with her online was 23-year-old Umar Hayat, another TikToker and the child of a retired government official. Investigators discovered that the crime originated from a terrible run-in with repeated rejection. Sana kept appropriate boundaries, but Hayat’s ego couldn’t accept the rejection.

Hayat went all the way from Jaranwala to Islamabad on June 2, 2025, carrying a 30-bore pistol. Renting a high-end Toyota Fortuner, he drove right to Sana’s house in Sector G-13/1. She declined to go outside to meet him, so he broke into the house.

Hayat shot Sana at close range after a heated disagreement started fast. Unbelievably, Sana’s mother and paternal aunt saw the horrific event firsthand. CCTV cameras also caught Hayat running from the scene with her phone, but police arrested him in Faisalabad just 20 hours later.

Courtroom Drama and Retracted Confessions

The path to justice was protracted and fierce. Almost a year had passed since the trial, and there were more than 50 emotional court hearings. The state officially charged Hayat in September 2025.

Massive turmoil erupted in the courtroom without warning, one day before the last decision. Hayat withdrew his original July 2025 confession in its entirety. He eagerly asserted that he was unsure of what a confession meant.

Furthermore, he charged the police with torturing him into signing a seven-page empty document. He even claimed that under great pressure from Sana’s millions of internet followers, authorities unfairly framed him. The eyewitness accounts and forensic evidence against him were completely impenetrable; hence, the judge flatly dismissed these last-minute justifications.

A Father’s Grief and a Shattered Internet

Emotional events unfolded outside the Islamabad court as Sana’s relatives responded to the news. With sobbing eyes, her father, Hassan Yousaf, embraced the death sentence. He said the decision belonged to society as a whole rather than merely to his family. He wishes this were a harsh warning to all crooks who imagine they can escape such horrific crimes.

Meanwhile, the case set off intense national debates regarding women’s safety in Pakistan. Many people see clear parallels between this case and past tragedies, including the killings of Qandeel Baloch and Noor Mukadam.

Although most of the public rejoiced at the decision, the matter also revealed a darker side of social media. Tragically, cyberbullies filled Sana’s earlier videos with toxic victim-blaming remarks, therefore demonstrating the great vulnerability that female content creators still experience online.
