An all-new setback has hit Pakistan cricket just days before a high-profile white-ball assignment. Opening batters Fakhar Zaman and Saim Ayub have been ruled out of the upcoming ODI series against Australia, the Pakistan Cricket Board confirmed.
The three-match series begins on May 30 and has brought attention to international sporting calendars. Pakistan now faces a sudden reshuffle at the top of the batting order.
Injury Setback Forces Key Withdrawals
The Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) confirmed both players are currently undergoing rehabilitation. They remain under the supervision of the PCB medical panel.
The board stated clearly: “Consequently, they have been ruled out of selection for the ODI series.”
In addition, PCB expressed support for both players. It also confirmed that further updates on squad changes will follow soon.
Australia Tour Schedule Locked In
Despite the setback, the Australia tour will continue as planned. The visitors arrive in Islamabad on May 23.
The ODI series will be played across three major Pakistani venues:
- 1st ODI: May 30 – Rawalpindi Cricket Stadium
- 2nd ODI: June 2 – Gaddafi Stadium, Lahore
- 3rd ODI: June 4 – Gaddafi Stadium, Lahore
This series also adds competitive rhythm ahead of global tournaments like the upcoming FIFA World Cup, which continues to take over international sporting focus.
Pakistan’s Top Order Under Pressure
The absence of Fakhar Zaman and Saim Ayub forces Pakistan to rethink its opening combination. Both players were expected to anchor early innings stability.
Now, selectors may explore backup options from the domestic circuit or bench strength. The pressure increases further with Australia’s pace-heavy attack.
Bigger Picture for Pakistan Cricket
While this is not a long-term blow, timing is a critical point. Pakistan is working to build rhythm across formats, especially with global sporting attention rising around major events like the FIFA World Cup cycle, dominating fan engagement worldwide.
The PCB has emphasised recovery-first policies. Therefore, Fakhar Zaman and Saim Ayub are expected to return once fully fit.
