PCB chairman and Federal Interior Minister Mohsin Naqvi has thrown his weight behind the national side, promising full support for their participation in the upcoming FIH Pro League.
A crucial meeting with the skipper
On Monday, Naqvi sat down with national team captain Ammad Butt, who laid out the hurdles that have been holding Pakistan hockey back. From revival plans to the team’s preparations, Butt made sure the challenges were on the table.
There was also discussion on player welfare and rehabilitation, an area that has long needed attention.
Mohsin Naqvi, for his part, did not hold back. Calling Pakistan’s qualification for the Pro League an honour, he assured the captain that this campaign won’t be just another struggle story.
Instead, he promised to take a hands-on role in ensuring the team is backed properly.

In a move that has already lifted spirits, Naqvi announced a reward of PKR one million for each player. He also guaranteed that visa issues, a recurring headache for Pakistani athletes, would be resolved without delay.
To further ease the burden, the PCB’s medical team will now look after fitness and injury concerns, while the logistics department has been tasked with providing complete operational support.
It’s a rare but welcome crossover where cricket’s powerful machinery is stepping in to help hockey.
The bigger picture
It’s important to remember how this opportunity came about. Last month, the International Hockey Federation (FIH) extended an invitation to Pakistan after New Zealand, despite winning the Nations Cup, decided to pull out of the Pro League.
The Pakistan Hockey Federation (PHF), however, had asked for an extension before confirming participation, citing logistical concerns. Now, with Naqvi stepping in, the outlook seems brighter.
Pakistan hockey fans, who have long been craving stability and structure, will be hoping this support translates into strong performances on the field. For a sport that once brought Pakistan global glory, the Pro League could be more than just another tournament, it could be a step towards revival.
