The Vatican has posted the first formal picture of Pope Leo XIV shortly after his election. The new pope, 69-year-old Robert Francis Prevost, at the time of his election, from Chicago, can be found wearing the papal regalia. He appears in the traditional red mozzetta, stole, rochet, and pectoral cross, as distinct from the dressier style that his predecessor, Pope Francis, wore. Pope Leo XIV’s signature also makes a return for the classical “P.P.” (Pastor Pastorum) label, one that fell into disuse with Francis.
The recently discovered coat of arms of Pope Leo XIV is extremely significant. There is a blue field featuring a fleur-de-lis on one side, representing the Holy Trinity as well as the Virgin Mary. There is an open book under a burning Sacred Heart in a closed cover on the other side, which is referring to St. Augustine’s dramatic conversion and to the Augustinian legacy of Pope Leo XIV.
