Fawad Khan, the heartthrob who has worked in both Pakistani and Indian films, was set to make a comeback to Indian screens after years.

In a dramatic turn of events, India has stepped up its cultural and digital war against Pakistani content, putting Fawad Khan’s Abir Gulaal on hold. The decision, reportedly a reaction to rising geopolitical tensions, has generated widespread debate on censorship, nationalism, and the future of cross-border art.

Abir Gulaal Shelved Indefinitely

Fawad Khan, the heartthrob who has worked in both Pakistani and Indian films, was set to make a comeback to Indian screens after years. Opposite Bollywood actress Vaani Kapoor, his appearance in Abir Gulaal was a much-awaited spectacle for fans across borders.

A Cross-Border Love Story in Limbo

Scheduled for release on May 9, Abir Gulaal was a romantic drama about love and identity. But after the Pahalgam tragedy on April 22, the release of the film was indefinitely postponed. The film is now embroiled in a geopolitical shootout with its future in question.

Zee Zindagi Wipes Content Clean

Zee Zindagi, a platform that was much feted for introducing Pakistani serials to Indian audiences, removed all its YouTube content overnight. This extreme action followed a government advisory asking digital platforms to delete Pakistani-origin content at once.

Zee Zindagi had established itself as a bridge of culture, bringing Pakistani storytelling to Indian viewers. From Humsafar to Zindagi Gulzar Hai, its programming slate was valued. Now, it’s been wiped clean, removing years of cooperation and mutual respect.

The Role of Operation Sindoor in Escalating Tensions

Indo-Pak tensions escalated after Operation Sindoor, a military operation by India on nine spots in Pakistan, killed innocent civilians in the wee hours of May 6-7. The action came on the heels of the deadly Pahalgam terror attack, which claimed the lives of 26 individuals.

Whereas the military is directed towards national security, its aftershocks tend to touch the softer aspects, such as art, film, and cultural exchange. Therefore, cooperation between Indian and Pakistani artists has been relegated to the back burner.

The MIB Advisory: What it Means

The Ministry of Information and Broadcasting (MIB) instructed all OTT platforms and digital intermediaries to suspend the availability of content that is from Pakistan. The instruction ranged from web series and movies to songs and podcasts.

Subscription-based or free, whatever it is, the advice was that everything that has Pakistani origins needs to be removed. Although the notice is non-binding, it’s being taken seriously on all platforms.

The Reaction from OTT Giants

Although the advisory is not a legal directive, streaming services such as Netflix, Amazon Prime Video, and Disney+ Hotstar have been scouring their catalogues for anything that might trigger under the present directive.

YouTube and Spotify, being digital intermediaries, should also take action. Pakistani creators’ and artists’ content is being taken down or geo-blocked, affecting both the audience and the creative output.

The Blockade of Pakistani Celebrities

Some of the leading Pakistani stars, Fawad Khan, Mahira Khan, Hania Aamir, Abida Parveen, and Ali Zafar, have also had their Indian social media accounts and posts barred or blocked.

In a world already segregated, art had been a thin, delicate thread that stitched people together. In light of India’s choice to close down Pakistani content and postpone films like Abir Gulaal, that thread appears to be unraveling. Regardless of whether it’s an extended delay or an outright freeze, one thing is certain: the stage is empty, and the tales are untold.
