Cricket West Indies (CWI) has announced a 15-man squad for the upcoming three-match ODI series against Pakistan, kicking off on August 8 at the Brian Lara Cricket Academy in Tarouba, Trinidad.
Familiar Faces and a Few Surprises
The West Indies have stuck with the core group that toured England earlier this year. However, there are some key changes worth noting.
Alzarri Joseph, the fiery pacer, is missing from the lineup — but it’s not due to injury. Instead, he’s been given a well-earned rest to manage his workload. On the flip side, Romario Shepherd makes his return to the side after sitting out the Ireland and England tours.
The rest of the squad features a mix of youth and experience. From Shai Hope leading from the front to emerging talents like Jewel Andrew and Jediah Blades, it’s a balanced group with plenty to prove.
Sammy’s Focus: Qualification and Cohesion
Head coach Darren Sammy didn’t mince his words when addressing the importance of the upcoming series. Pakistan, ranked higher than the West Indies, presents a real test.
“Pakistan presents a different test and challenge as we continue our push for automatic qualification for the 2027 World Cup,” Sammy noted.
His vision goes beyond just qualification. He’s looking to instil a winning mentality and ensure team cohesion, the kind of mindset shift that can transform a team’s long-term trajectory.
“While qualifying is our immediate goal, maintaining a winning mentality and team cohesion is essential for long-term success,” Sammy added.
The emphasis on ranking points is clear. Matches against stronger opponents like Pakistan offer valuable opportunities to improve standings — and every point counts on the road to 2027.
