Why did Usman Khawaja Wear Black Armband in Sydney Test_usman-khawaja-clears-the-air-on-retirement-talk

Usman Khawaja, Australiaโ€™s 38-year-old opening stalwart, has dismissed retirement rumors with the same calm and confidence heโ€™s known for at the crease.

Speaking from Barbados ahead of Australiaโ€™s upcoming two-Test series against the West Indies, Khawaja made it clear: he’s not going anywhere just yet.

โ€œI understand Iโ€™m 38 years old, people will always look for an excuse,โ€ Khawaja told reporters. โ€œBut I still have a role to playโ€”opening the batting, providing a solid start, and setting up a platform for Australia.โ€

And it’s not just about runs anymore. With David Warnerโ€™s retirement leaving a vacancy at the top, Khawajaโ€™s role has evolved into that of a mentor. His new opening partner, 19-year-old Sam Konstas, is set to make just his third Test appearance, and Khawaja is keen to guide the young prodigy through the rigours of international cricket.

โ€œWith young Sammy coming in, itโ€™s an added role for meโ€”helping him through his journey and passing on knowledge,โ€ Khawaja said. โ€œItโ€™s important to build some stability at the top and guide him while I can.โ€

Brushing Off the Criticism

Of course, with age comes scrutiny, particularly around performance. Critics have pointed out Khawajaโ€™s dip in returns against seam bowling, citing his average of 25.29 against pace since January 2024, slightly below the global average of 27.84 for openers. But the left-hander isnโ€™t fazed.

โ€œI donโ€™t understand how people say I struggle against seam if Iโ€™ve scored so many runs in Shield cricket and been Australiaโ€™s top scorer in the WTC,โ€ he said with a smile.

โ€œAs an opener, you face the new ball every timeโ€”thatโ€™s just the nature of the job. I wish I could face more spin.โ€

No Farewell Tour Just Yet

With whispers growing that the Sydney Test at the end of the Ashes could be his final hurrah, Usman Khawaja remains grounded and unbothered.

โ€œIโ€™m not someone saying I want to play another 10 years,โ€ he clarified.

โ€œItโ€™s about whatโ€™s best for the team. I could have stopped two years ago, but I knew I was still contributing. When that changes, everyone will know.”
