Application Criteria for the Scholarship

The criteria for Chevening is not as difficult as one might think. It’s like any other scholarship in the world. You will first need to answer the following questions about yourself:

Q: Do you have strong examples of your leadership and influencing skills?

The top 1% of Chevening Scholarship awardees can clearly demonstrate instances where they have taken the lead and influenced others. They provide examples with measurable, tangible results.

Such examples could include:

  1. Driving change within your community or organisation
  2. Improving outcomes for others
  3. Solving a specific challenge
  4. Successfully implementing a project or idea that had a tangible impact

Q: Do you have good examples of building professional relationships to achieve positive outcomes?

Effective leaders excel at building strong professional relationships. If you’re awarded a Chevening Scholarship, you’ll have many opportunities to connect and collaborate with other leaders in your field.

We’re looking for examples of how you have:

  • Built strong, trust-based relationships
  • Used collaboration to deliver real, measurable outcomes
  • Brought people together to work towards a common goal
  • Contributed to meaningful change within your organisation, community, or beyond

Tell them how your relationship-building skills have led to positive results and lasting impact.

Q: How does your career plan address both local and global challenges in alignment with UK priority areas?

They want applicants with a clear, achievable post-study career plan that shows commitment to solving key challenges. The plan should have measurable goals, demonstrate how the chosen course builds relevant skills, and align with the UK’s global priorities.

UK priority areas include:

  • Promoting growth and prosperity
  • Building resilience in a climate-vulnerable world
  • Strengthening security and stability in a volatile world
  • Supporting development for more inclusive and effective societies

Demonstrate how your career path will create a meaningful impact locally and globally in these areas.

Q: How does your chosen course support your ambitions to change?

To be chosen for Chevening, you must clearly articulate, in your own words, how a Chevening Scholarship will support your goals for tackling local and global challenges.

To be invited to interview, you must:

  1. Show that you’ve researched your three chosen courses and explain how each one connects to your background, career aspirations, and the impact you hope to make.
  2. Describe how specific modules or areas of study will equip you with the skills and knowledge needed to achieve your goals.
  3. Demonstrate a genuine willingness to collaborate with the UK in tackling shared global and local challenges, such as advancing growth and prosperity, strengthening security, building climate resilience, or supporting sustainable development.

You will be assessed against your ability to answer questions in each of these four areas.

Important Note: While answering these questions, originality is a must. The use of AI software to generate answers in Chevening applications is strictly prohibited. Chevening uses tools and software to identify fraud, plagiarism, and AI-generated answers in applications.
