In his dedicated bid to “Make America Great Again,” Donald Trump has enacted a controversial bill that is expected to spell doom for immigration in the US.
The legislation is being called Trump’s “Big Beautiful Bill,” which was signed by the US President on July 4th. It promises to take his disputed immigration policies a step further.
Since coming into power earlier this year, Trump has spearheaded a brutal official crackdown on illegal immigrants. Showing no signs of slowing down, the One Big Beautiful Bill Act (OBBBA) is the latest threat to immigration in the US.
The Big Beautiful Bill allocates 170 billion Dollars to ICE
President Trump’s “Big Beautiful Bill” has dedicated an astounding 170 billion dollars to the US Immigration and Customs Enforcement Agency (ICE), making it the most heavily funded agency in the American federal government.
Among the bill’s most salient features, $45 billion has been appropriated to ICE to build new detention centres. This increase could facilitate the detention of at least 116,000 immigrants daily.
Another staggering $46.6 billion has been allotted for the border wall construction, a threefold increase over the amount expended in Trump’s first term.
For the agency that oversees the US’s immigration court system. $3.3 billion has been allocated with a cap of 800 judges. The fees for immigration services has also been increased.
Strict measures have been imposed on asylum seekers. Those fleeing persecution will have to pay a $100 application fee and an additional $100 for every year that the application is pending.
Critics of Trump’s “Big Beautiful Bill” have warned that the recent legislation could lead to more ICE raids, economic disturbances, and restriction of humanitarian services.
The Bill: Heavily Opposed and Criticised
Americans have not taken too kindly to Trump’s recent immigration policies. More than half believing that ICE operations have gone too far. The Big Beautiful Bill is only likely to increase such sentiments.
On a political level, Democrats have vehemently rejected the US President’s crackdown on illegal immigrants. Matt Barretto, a Democratic pollster who has studied voter sentiments on immigration, stated:
“There’s virtually no support for this mass deportation effort outside of [Trump’s] rabid Maga base. Other than that, people want immigrants to work here and to be here and to contribute to America.”
Oblivious to many Republicans, mass deportations and draconian immigration policies have minimal advantages. It could shrink the economy and weaken the labour market for everyone, US-born workers included.
While some may believe that Trump’s “Big Beautiful Bill” will protect national interests, the American Dream is changing for immigrants. This harsh new reality is likely to see a rise in uncertainty, fear, and discrimination for non-Americans.
