Popular short-video platform TikTok has announced a new feature that will go live in Pakistan on April 3rd and will let users refresh their For You feed if they think their recommendations are no longer useful. This new function is a part of TikTok’s continued initiatives to guarantee its consumers a good viewing experience while also promoting self-expression.

Users of TikTok can discover a variety of content, producers, communities, and businesses thanks to the For You feed feature. The recommendations of others, however, occasionally don’t seem fresh or don’t offer enough diversity. To prevent this, TikTok is introducing a feature that enables users to update the content that is recommended to them in the For You stream, giving the impression that they have newly joined the platform. Then, depending on fresh interactions, the recommendation engine will suggest more content.

The option to filter out videos that include particular hashtags or phrases from their For You feeds, skip upcoming films from a specific creator, or even turn off a certain sound are just a few of the content controls that TikTok users already have to customize their experience. Users’ previously enabled settings and any accounts they have followed will not be affected by turning on the refresh option.

TikTok always strives to make watching fun while also employing a variety of security measures to protect its site. For example, TikTok filters out content with complex or inappropriate themes from teen accounts and removes it from accounts that break its rules. It also prevents offensive content from being recommended into For You feeds and minimizes recommendations of topics that could be harmful if repeatedly viewed.

Making sure the variety of products surfaced to a viewer isn’t too limited or repeated is an inherent challenge of any recommendation system. To prevent this difficulty, TikTok is working to develop a system that incorporates a range of subjects. TikTok strives to avoid giving users the content they have already seen and normally won’t display two videos in a row from the same producer or that share the same sound.

TikTok is aware that users express themselves in a variety of ways on the app, including when they’re depressed or going through a trying time in their lives. In light of this, TikTok’s strategy is to delete content that encourages or glorifies self-harm or other practices while permitting recovery- or educational-focused content, with restrictions on how frequently such content is eligible for a recommendation.

TikTok has improved its systems with more than 15 updates over the past year, extending to accommodate more languages. This work is being led by its trust and safety and product teams. It is informed by academic research and expert consultation, including the Boston Children’s Hospital in the US and the International Association for Suicide Prevention.
In an effort to provide users with a richer discovery experience, TikTok will keep making these efforts. The platform is committed to giving its community a friendly setting for self-expression as well as a fun atmosphere.
