Skype has officially started its shutdown process. Microsoft announced that the popular video calling service will no longer be available after May 5, 2025. After over 20 years of connecting people, Skype is being integrated into Microsoft Teams — a new all-in-one platform for messaging, video calls and collaboration.

Skype, launched in 2003, became a go-to app for voice and video communication. But over time, users began favouring alternatives like Zoom, WhatsApp, and FaceTime. In a blog post, Microsoft said, “To better meet customer needs, we are retiring Skype and shifting focus to Microsoft Teams (free).” This move is part of the company’s effort to simplify its services.

For current Skype users, moving to Teams should be straightforward. You can log in using your Skype ID, and your contacts and chat history will transfer over. Microsoft began informing users early, giving everyone time to adjust. The company also promises to provide support during the transition.

Microsoft has stopped accepting new sign-ups for Skype’s paid features, such as Skype Credit and calling plans. However, you can still use any remaining balance within Teams. Features like the Skype Dial Pad will still be accessible through the Skype website or directly via Teams.
