Religious scholar Maulana Tariq Jameel’s son, Asim Jamil took his life on Sunday at his residence in the Tulamba area of Khanewal district, Punjab.

Asim was rushed to Tulamba Hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

The district police officer (DPO) has seen a CCTV footage that shows Asim Jamil committing suicide,” according to reports that cited Multan’s Regional Police Officer (RPO) Captain (retd) Sohail Chaudhry. The police officer also said that they were sending the footage for forensic analysis, as per reports.

The details revealed that Asim requested his domestic aide, Imran, to bring him the pistol, reportedly a 30-bore firearm. The police officer said that the domestic help had asked Asim not to do so.

Asim Jamil’s brother took to social media to release a video statement, explaining the reason behind Asim’s suicide. He revealed that Asim had been grappling with mental illness for an extended period and had been undergoing electric shock therapy to stabilize his mental condition since childhood.

Meanwhile, Punjab Inspector General of Police Dr Usman Anwar has sought a comprehensive report regarding this incident from the Multan RPO.

Asim’s Earlier life

“He married a girl of his choice but they divorced two years ago with no children,” the RPO added. His marital ties were to a Niazi family from Khanewal.

The sources said Maulana Tariq Jamil had built Al-Hussain School in Tulamba, which was managed and run by Asim’s wife, who was also the principal of the school, while Asim had neither completed matriculation nor had he received any religious education.

This event stirred a wave of condolences from across the nation, including heartfelt messages from renowned figures in the entertainment industry. Saba Qamar, Ahmed Ali Butt, and Shaista Lodhi expressed their sympathies on social media.

 

The incident also drew the attention of Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif and the National Assembly Speaker Raja Parvaiz Ashraf.
