On June 4, the world observes the International Day of Innocent Children Victims of Aggression. This year, the day carries immense weight as we reflect on the harrowing experiences of Palestinian children in Gaza, whose lives have been irrevocably altered by ongoing hostilities.
To date, more than have been killed in Gaza at the hands of Israel.
A Generation Under Siege
Since the escalation of violence in October 2023, Gaza has witnessed an alarming toll on its youngest residents. Reports indicate that over 16,500 children have lost their lives, with thousands more injured or orphaned.
The relentless airstrikes and ground operations have not only claimed lives but have also decimated the infrastructure essential for children’s well-being.
Dr. Feroze Sidhwa, an American trauma surgeon who volunteered in Gaza, recounted operating in hospitals devoid of basic necessities.
“Children died, not because their injuries were insufferable, but because we lacked blood, antibiotics, and the most basic supplies,” he told the UN Security Council. His testimony underscored the dire medical conditions faced by the injured, many of whom are children.

Stories that Echo the Pain
Among the countless tragedies is the story of 11-year-old Yaqeen Hammad, a vibrant social media influencer known for her uplifting videos and humanitarian efforts. Just days before her death in an airstrike, she posted a video asking, “Where is the world?”- aย haunting question that lingers in the aftermath of her loss.
In another heart-wrenching incident, Dr Alaa al-Najjar lost nine of her ten children in a single airstrike. Her surviving son, 11-year-old Adam, remains critically injured.
These personal stories bring to light the profound grief and resilience of families enduring unimaginable hardships.
Schools and hospitals, traditionally considered sanctuaries during conflicts, have not been spared. A drone strike on a school shelter in Khan Younis resulted in the deaths of five individuals, including children.
A Call to Conscience
The International Day of Innocent Children Victims of Aggression serves as a global call to action. It urges the international community to recognise and address the plight of children caught in conflicts.
The stories emerging from Gaza are not just statistics; they are poignant reminders of the human cost of war.
As we commemorate this day, it is imperative to amplify the voices of those affected and to advocate for immediate measures to protect children in conflict zones. The resilience of Palestinian children amidst adversity is a testament to their strength, but it also highlights the urgent need for peace and protection.
In remembering the innocent lives lost and the futures jeopardised, let us reaffirm our commitment to safeguarding the rights and well-being of all children. Let’s ensure thatย their voices are heard too, their needs met too and their lives valued too.
