The ongoing T20I series against Zimbabwe has sparked more than a few debates, but one selection, in particular, has former Pakistan captain Rashid Latif scratching his head.

Right-arm speedster Haris Rauf, known for his fiery pace and lethal spells, is leading Pakistan’s bowling attack in Zimbabwe. However, Latif feels Haris is being overworked in matches that don’t demand his presence.

Speaking on a YouTube channel, Latif didn’t hold back his thoughts. “They should bring Haris for the South Africa Tests. He’s playing unnecessarily in these (Zimbabwe) T20Is,” he said.

Should Haris Rauf Be Rested?

Haris Rauf has been a vital cog in Pakistan’s bowling lineup, but as Latif rightly pointed out, why isn’t he being given a break? “If you can drop Shaheen, Hasnain, Naseem, and even Babar, why not your main weapon Haris Rauf?” Latif questioned.

It’s a fair observation. If star players like Shaheen Afridi are being rested for bigger assignments, why push Haris into a T20 series where his absence might not hurt Pakistan’s chances? Instead, his skills could be preserved for the far more demanding conditions of South Africa.

Why Haris in South Africa Makes Sense?

South African pitches, known for their pace and bounce, are a bowler’s paradise for someone like Haris Rauf. Latif firmly believes that Haris could wreak havoc in the upcoming Test series.

“He can be lethal in South Africa. I can guarantee his success, but I can’t say the same for other bowlers,” Latif said confidently. That’s high praise coming from a former captain who has seen plenty of raw talent over the years.

With his ability to generate pace and extract bounce, Haris could thrive in South Africa’s conditions. Tests require precision, and the extra workload of T20 cricket might take away some of his sharpness when it’s needed most.

It’s worth noting that the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) has kept Haris in only white-ball sides for the tour of South Africa, not showing faith in his abilities for the longer format.
