The Pakistan Super League (PSL) is likely to make history in 2025 as the first T20 league to clash with the Indian Premier League (IPL). The stage is set for a thrilling clash of cricketing giants, driven by Pakistan’s packed home season in 2024-25.
The scheduling dilemma arose because Pakistan is set to host its first ICC tournament in nearly three decades – the Champions Trophy scheduled for February 2025.
This monumental event has compelled the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) to carve out a window for the tenth season of the PSL between March and May.
This window will coincide with the IPL’s extended window in the international calendar, from March to the beginning of June.
Traditionally, the PSL kicks off in January and concludes in February. However, the PCB had to reschedule the tournament to avoid overlap with their commitments as hosts of the Champions Trophy.
Currently, the PCB is deliberating over three potential windows for PSL 2025, with the most favourable one overlapping with the IPL in April and May.
The PCB is weighing this strategic move against the advantages and disadvantages of holding the league concurrently with the IPL.
The alternative windows under consideration include a three-week slot in February, albeit conflicting with an ODI triangular series involving New Zealand and South Africa. The third option is around the Asia Cup scheduled for September 2025.
The final decision on the scheduling conundrum for PSL 2025 is slated for discussion at the upcoming PCB council meeting.
Notably, Pakistan are also the defending champions of the Champions Trophy, having won the last edition back in 2017 under Sarfaraz Ahmed.
