Pope Francis Hospitalised for Pneumonia and Lung Infection

Pope Francis is in critical condition after suffering a prolonged asthmatic respiratory crisis while being treated for pneumonia and a complex lung infection, the Vatican confirmed. The 88-year-old pontiff remains conscious and has been receiving high flows of oxygen to support his breathing. Doctors have also given him blood transfusions after tests showed low platelet counts. He has been hospitalised at Gemelli Hospital in Rome for a week.

Doctors warn that the biggest risk is the potential onset of sepsis, a severe blood infection that can complicate pneumonia. However, as of the latest update, there is no evidence of sepsis. “He knows heโ€™s in danger,” said Dr. Sergio Alfieri, head of medicine and surgery at Gemelli Hospital. The pope is responding to a combination of cortisone, antibiotics and supportive care.

The Vatican has denied rumours of an impending resignation, stating there is no canonical provision for such a case if a pope becomes incapacitated. While Pope Francis previously mentioned having a resignation letter prepared in case of medical inability, he remains fully engaged in his duties. Vatican Secretary of State Cardinal Pietro Parolin also dismissed speculation about secret meetings or a possible resignation, urging people to focus on his recovery.

The Pope’s condition remains serious and his medical team expects him to stay in the hospital for at least another week. Doctors continue to monitor his progress and adjust his treatment accordingly. The Vatican has urged against spreading misinformation and emphasised that Pope Francis is receiving the best possible care.
