Pakistan Monitoring Flights from China for HMPV

According to the Ministry of Health of Pakistan, there have been no cases of Human Metapneumovirus (HMPV) reported in the country so far. Furthermore, incoming flights from China are being monitored carefully by officials, in regard to a recent outbreak of the virus.

What is HMPV?

HMPV is a respiratory virus that demonstrates the signs and symptoms of cough, fever, nasal congestion, and difficulty breathing. While it causes mild illness in the majority of individuals, it can become quite severe in infants, the elderly and people with weak immune systems.

HMPV may spread through the close contact of an infected person when they sneeze or cough. It can also spread by touching contaminated surfaces.

Recent Outbreak in China

Presently, there is an ongoing HMPV outbreak in China, especially in Hunan. Tracking its progress on the internet brings to mind everything that happened at the onset of COVID-19.

Dr Shobha Luxmi, an infectious disease specialist, said, โ€œSince it is now being reported in large numbers in China, it is likely to eventually reach Pakistan, potentially in higher-than-usual numbers.โ€

Monitoring and Precautions in Pakistan

The preemptive measures being taken by Pakistan are more than adequate to keep out HMPV from the country’s borders. “Currently, there are no cases reported in Pakistan, but the Ministry of Health is monitoring it closely,” says Dr. Nadya Jamil, focal person at the Ministry of Health on HMPV.

All flights arriving from China are being observed, and passengers showing flu-like symptoms are tested and provided with care. Airport monitoring desks, already screening for Monkeypox (Mpox), are now also checking for HMPV.

Understanding the Risks

Health experts emphasise that HMPV is not as dangerous as COVID-19. Dr Luxmi noted, โ€œIt is not considered highly dangerous as the fatality rate is relatively low.โ€ However, the virus can still cause pneumonia and other respiratory issues in vulnerable groups.

Dr Javed Usman added, โ€œThe virus itself isnโ€™t life-threatening, but it can cause pneumonia and other respiratory issues, particularly in children, elderly, and those with weakened immune systems.โ€

Preventive Measures

Experts recommend following basic hygiene practices, wearing masks, and maintaining social distance.

Testing for HMPV requires a PCR test, making it essential to identify cases early. Vigilance and preventive measures need to be taken, even though the threat posed by the virus is still nothing compared to COVID-19.

HMPV is not a new virus and it has been researched in Pakistan since 2015. However, the recent spike in infection in China makes it all the more important to be careful. By monitoring flights and increasing airport screenings, Pakistan hopes to stay one step ahead of any possible outbreaks.
