Pakistan Fuel Price Hike: Petrol and Diesel Rates Set to Surge by March 15

Due to ongoing tensions and conflicts seen in the Middle East, Pakistan may see a hike in fuel prices in the coming weeks. As international oil prices surge, Pakistan’s diesel and petrol prices are expected to see a rise of Rs 32 in the coming week.

However, this hike in fuel prices is not just in Pakistan but has also affected the global petroleum markets. Energy analysts warn that if these tensions and conflicts continue, this could further disrupt oil supply rates and push these prices even higher.

Petrol ex-refinery Price in Pakistan

Reports indicate that the ex-refinery price of petrol in Pakistan will surge by March 15 as global crude prices climb. The price will likely jump from Rs153.50 to Rs186.47 per litre, a spike of roughly Rs32.

If international market trends continue, this shift will drive up the retail price of petrol for consumers across the country.

Global Petrol Prices are skyrocketing as Supply Disruptions rattle International Markets.

Current market data shows that international petrol prices are surging, with rates expected to climb from $79.14 to $97.92 per barrel. This sharp spike in global crude costs is the primary catalyst for the anticipated fuel price in Pakistan.

The reasons for the sudden hike include:

  • Geopolitical Conflict: Ongoing tensions in the Middle East, specifically the closure of the Strait of Hormuz, have choked global supply lines.
  • Skyrocketing Logistics: Freight and insurance costs for oil tankers have jumped significantly, with insurance premiums alone rising from $30,000 to nearly $400,000 per ship.
  • Policy Shift: To manage this volatility, the Pakistani government is considering moving to weekly price reviews instead of the traditional fortnightly (15-day) schedule.

Diesel Prices May Rise

High-speed diesel (HSD) prices are also expected to climb significantly alongside petrol. Market insiders suggest that the ex-refinery price of diesel could surge by more than Rs50 per litre by March 15. This local spike mirrors a dramatic shift in the global market, where diesel fuel prices are projected to skyrocket from $93.2 to $138 per barrel.

Because diesel powers the backbone of Pakistan’s economy, specifically the transport and logistics sectors, this increase will likely have far-reaching consequences.

Economic Impact on Pakistan

If the government implements these projected hikes, the country could face a sharp rise in transportation costs and overall inflation. Petrol and diesel prices are fundamental to Pakistan’s economic stability; fluctuations in fuel rates dictate everything from public transport fares to the retail price of food and essential household commodities.

The potential surge in current fuel prices reflects the extreme volatility currently gripping global energy markets. For Pakistan, these adjustments are more than just a numbers game at the pump; they represent a significant inflationary pressure that could strain the purchasing power of the average citizen and increase the operational costs for businesses nationwide.

As the March 15 deadline approaches, the government faces the difficult task of balancing international price shocks with the need to maintain domestic economic stability.
