Pakistan, Afghanistan, UAE Tri-Nation Series Nears Green Light

Published on

What started as a simple bilateral series between Pakistan and Afghanistan is now shaping up to be a much bigger affair.

The Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) has pitched an exciting new idea, turning the two-team showdown into a full-fledged tri-nation T20I series, bringing the United Arab Emirates (UAE) into the mix.

With the 2025 Asia Cup just around the corner, the idea is to give the players some quality match time in UAE conditions, helping them get used to the pitches, heat and overall environment.

Final talks in Dhaka

All eyes are on the Asian Cricket Council (ACC) meeting happening today in Dhaka, Bangladesh. According to insiders, this is where the final touches are expected to be made. The schedule, venues, and format of the tri-nation series between Pakistan, Afghanistan and UAE are likely to be ironed out on the sidelines of the official sessions.

Interestingly, despite some initial resistance from India, Sri Lanka and Oman regarding the venue, the ACC President Mohsin Naqvi seems to have pulled off a diplomatic win.

Out of 25 member countries, 24 are attending, a strong show of unity. Even the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI), which had raised eyebrows, is attending virtually, with Vice-President Rajeev Shukla set to join online.

A strategic move by the PCB

From a cricketing point of view, this tri-series could prove vital. UAE offers a neutral, familiar venue for all three teams, and Asia Cup 2025 will be played in the same conditions. For Pakistan, shifting the series from home turf to the UAE not only avoids logistical challenges but also boosts their preparation for the continental event.

Moreover, involving Afghanistan and the UAE gives the competition more edge and variety. Afghanistan have shown their T20 prowess time and again, and UAE, although relatively new to the top tier, will benefit massively from playing against stronger opponents.
