Designer Maria B felt that the internet needed another round of her ignorance and disinformation after she was criticized for her anti-transgender sentiments in the past. The shooting for Maria B’s most recent, opulent formal ready-to-wear collection took place at Derawar Fort and the Bahawalpur Nawabs’ ancestral burial, both of which are historic sites. Models can be seen dancing in the cemetery in the clips, blatantly violating the reverence of the location.
The Abbasi family, who were the Nawab family in power in Bahawalpur, has condemned the act and threatened legal action against Maria B for allegedly leading their staff astray in order to stage a photo shoot in their ancestral graveyard with dancers dancing next to and even walking on the graves of their ancestors.
However, a number of online users attacked Maria B for doing so and for disrespecting the graveyard’s sacredness. All of this backfired, as many users criticized the fashion designer for having little expertise in delicate and controversial subjects. The incident has also sparked debate over the necessity of stricter rules governing the use of historical and cultural sites for profit.
