An Israeli strike hit Gaza’s only Catholic Church on Thursday. It killed three people and injured several others, according to the Latin Patriarchate of Jerusalem. This body oversees the parish and condemned the attack strongly.

The Patriarchate said, “This targeting of innocent civilians and of a sacred place cannot be justified.” The statement added that two women and one man died in the strike on the Holy Family Church. Furthermore, it declared, “This horrific war must come to a complete end.

The statement also said that victims sought shelter inside the compound “after they had already lost their homes, possessions, and dignity.” In addition, the Holy Family Church confirmed, “A number of injured people, some in critical condition, need treatment.”

Pope Leo sent a telegram to the victims. He wrote, “I am deeply saddened,” and urged leaders to agree to “an immediate ceasefire.” The message also expressed his “profound hope for dialogue, reconciliation, and enduring peace in the region.” Cardinal Pietro Parolin, the Vatican Secretary of State, signed the telegram. However, the message did not mention Israel by name.

Meanwhile, the Israeli military announced it is investigating the incident. Israel’s foreign ministry stated on X that it will release the results soon. The ministry said Israel does not target churches or religious sites and regrets harm to civilians.

Earlier, the Patriarchate reported that parish priest Father Gabriel Romanelli was among the injured. It also confirmed that the church sustained damage.

Father Romanelli, an Argentine priest, often updated the late Pope Francis about the conflict through calls and messages. TV footage from Al-Ahly Hospital showed him receiving treatment with a bandage on his lower right leg.

Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni strongly criticised the attack. She said, “The attacks against the civilian population that Israel has been carrying out for months are unacceptable. No military action can justify such an attitude.”
