Tensions between Pakistan and India have increased as India has moved warships with cruise missiles closer to Pakistan’s coastline. According to The Telegraph, the Indian Navy has sent its western fleet into the northern Arabian Sea, putting it within range of Karachi — a major port city and the base of Pakistan’s naval headquarters.

The fleet includes an aircraft carrier, destroyers, frigates, and anti-submarine ships. Some of these vessels are reportedly equipped with BrahMos missiles, which carry a 300kg warhead and can hit targets up to 500 miles away at high speed.

India’s move came after it claimed to have stopped a large number of Pakistani missiles and drones that were allegedly aimed at 15 of its cities. Pakistan denied this, saying it had instead intercepted 48 Indian drones.

Explosions in India

On Friday, at least 10 explosions were heard near Srinagar International Airport in Indian-controlled Kashmir. Loud blasts and sirens were also reported in Jammu, causing panic and power cuts. Former Chief Minister Omar Abdullah wrote on X that he could hear “intermittent sounds of blasts, probably heavy artillery.”

Artillery fire continued through the night along the Line of Control (LoC), with over two dozen civilians reportedly killed since May 7. Earlier this week, India carried out airstrikes with 80 fighter jets, claiming to destroy nine training camps. Pakistan denied the camps’ existence and said the strikes killed 31 civilians, damaged mosques, and hit a power station. Pakistan also said it shot down several Indian jets, including three Rafales.

During a press briefing in Rawalpindi, Pakistan Army spokesperson Lt Gen Ahmed Sharif Chaudhry accused India of “trying to set a dangerous new precedent.” He showed photos of children reportedly killed in the Indian strikes and stated, “Pakistan will retaliate — at a time, place, and method of its choosing.”

Diplomatic talks have started. India’s foreign secretary reached out to his Pakistani counterpart to offer condolences and called for both sides to lower tensions. Talks with India’s foreign minister also focused on fighting terrorism.
