Gender representation in law enforcement in Pakistan has been an issue for a very long time. Women have always been at the backhand of every field but not anymore! Erum Mohmand has now become the first-ever woman from the tribal district of Mohmand to join the Balochistan Police. Erum has been appointed as a sub-inspector in the provincial police force, following the footsteps of her father, SSP Sajid Khan Mohmand, who died during a terrorist attack in Chaman in July 2017.

Her Inspiration

Her father’s dedication to duty and sacrifice for the country left a lasting impact on Erum. She expressed pride in being the brave daughter of a courageous father and said, “I have always followed in my father’s footsteps since childhood. My father never shied away from challenging assignments and always stood firm on difficult missions,” while talking to The Express Tribune on Police Martyrs’ Day. I think it is safe to say like father like daughter!

Erum believes in the importance of women’s participation in community policing. Holding a degree from Peshawar University, she thinks that women can bring a unique approach to law enforcement. Her entry into the Balochistan Police is a historic moment for her family and the Mohmand tribal district.“I will continue my father’s mission, as he was deeply passionate about serving the nation. I, too, will not step back in defending our country,” she added.

Her recruitment is not only a matter of pride for her family but also a milestone in promoting gender equality and empowering women in fields traditionally dominated by men in Pakistan. It is high time that women start getting equal opportunities in all fields. With her induction, Erum hopes to inspire more women to pursue careers in law enforcement and contribute to the safety and security of their communities.
