The cricketing world is buzzing with anticipation as India and Pakistan prepare to face off in a high-voltage T20 World Cup 2024 match on June 9 at the Nassau County International Cricket Stadium in New York. However, the excitement is dampened by growing concerns over the pitch and ground conditions at the venue.
The stadium, which recently hosted its first international match, saw two low-scoring matches on a difficult pitch and slow outfield.
During the first match, Sri Lanka were bowled out for a mere 77 runs, and South Africa, despite their efforts, took 17 overs to chase down the target.
Yesterday, India played against Ireland in another low-scoring encounter. Ireland managed just 97 runs, and India chased it down in 12.2 overs, losing two wickets in the process.
Cricket Fraternity’s Frustration
Cricket fans and experts alike are not pleased with the quality of cricket being played on these pitches.
Renowned commentator and cricket expert Harsha Bhogle voiced his concerns on X (formerly Twitter), expressing disbelief at the prospect of an India-Pakistan match on such a surface.
“Have to do something about the pitches. Can’t imagine India vs Pakistan on this one,” Bhogle tweeted.
Fans echoed his sentiments, pointing out that while the pitches were imported from Adelaide, Australia, and prepared in Florida for six months, the outfield remains a significant issue. The sandy and sloppy ground conditions have raised fears of potential injuries.
Safety Concerns for Players
Moreover, India’s head coach, Rahul Dravid also highlighted these concerns after India’s warm-up game against Bangladesh at the same venue.
“The ground is a little bit soft. So I think the guys will feel that a little bit tomorrow on the hamstring and calves,” Dravid said, stressing the need for players to take extra care to avoid injuries.
Cricket fans are calling out the International Cricket Council (ICC) for not adequately testing the grounds before the T20 World Cup.
The outfield’s condition has been particularly criticized, with fears that it will prevent the ball from reaching the boundary and pose injury risks to the players.
The ICC’s decision to proceed with matches on these surfaces has left many fans frustrated and concerned about the quality and safety of the upcoming games.
