Four Pakistani Mountaineers Set Out to Conquer Historic Himalayan Expeditions in Nepal

Four Pakistani Mountaineers are currently in Nepal for the spring climbing season, aiming to summit some of the world’s highest and toughest peaks, including Everest, Dhaulagiri and Kanchenjunga.

Sajid Ali Sadpara, the son of the late mountaineer Muhammad Ali Sadpara, is leading the effort. He is trying to climb Dhaulagiri (8,167 meters), the world’s seventh-highest peak. Sajid reached the mountain’s base camp on April 6. He has completed acclimatisation up to Camp 3 and is now waiting for a good weather window for a summit push around May 9.

He is following Alpine-style climbing, which means he is climbing without the use of supplementary oxygen or high-altitude porters. If successful, this will be his ninth 8,000 m+ peak climbed under such conditions. His previous summits include K2, Nanga Parbat, Broad Peak and both Gasherbrum I and II.

Another Pakistani climber, Naila Kiani, has begun her approach to Kanchenjunga (8,586 meters), the third-highest mountain in the world. It will take her about a week to reach the base camp. Naila has already climbed 11 of the 14 highest peaks in the world and remains the only Pakistani woman to do so.

Joining her on Kanchenjunga is Sirbaz Khan, who summited Annapurna (8,091 meters) without oxygen on April 7. He has already climbed 13 of the 14 world’s 8,000m peaks, most of them without using oxygen. Kanchenjunga is his final peak to complete all 14, which would make him the first Pakistani to achieve this milestone.

Wajidullah Nagri has reached the Everest Base Camp. He is preparing for his summit attempt. He has already summited five major peaks in Pakistan, including K2 and Nanga Parbat.

With all four climbers aiming for major accomplishments, this spring season could become a historic chapter for Pakistani mountaineering.
