In a bold push to modernise national aviation infrastructure, the Pakistan Airports Authority (PAA) has commenced work on multiple new airport projects across the country. These initiatives aim to strengthen Pakistan’s aviation network while addressing long-standing connectivity gaps in underserved areas.
As part of the plan, new airports are being developed in Mirpur (Azad Jammu and Kashmir), Dera Ismail Khan, and Hyderabad. Simultaneously, the government has initiated the reconstruction and expansion of Sukkur Airport to elevate it to a regional aviation hub. The strategic focus remains on improving accessibility, enabling efficient air travel, and unlocking economic potential in emerging regions.
Land Acquisition, Feasibility Studies, and Regional Impact
The government has made swift progress, with feasibility studies nearing completion and land acquisition already underway in Dera Ismail Khan. Authorities view the D.I. Khan airport as a long-overdue step towards improving air mobility for southern Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and neighbouring districts. Officials believe the development will create long-term value by enhancing intercity trade, tourism, and connectivity.
In Mirpur, stakeholders anticipate that the new facility will bridge aviation gaps for Azad Kashmir, while Hyderabad’s airport is expected to streamline business and cargo movement for interior Sindh. These locations were strategically chosen based on projected passenger volume, logistical needs, and regional growth outlook.
Sukkur Expansion and Hyderabad Aviation School on the Horizon
During a recent briefing to lawmakers, the PAA outlined detailed plans for the revamp of Sukkur Airport, including a full-scale reconstruction of the current terminal and the addition of a new passenger facility. Authorities envision Sukkur becoming a key northern Sindh aviation gateway, offering enhanced domestic operations and future international potential.
Meanwhile, the government has instructed the PAA to initiate commercial flight operations from Hyderabad Airport. Alongside this, plans are in motion to establish an aviation training school at the same site. This move will support technical education, create employment pathways in the aviation sector, and align with broader goals to build a skilled workforce in aviation and aeronautics.
