Donkey Meat Scandal Spreads From Islamabad to Battagram

Published on

Authorities in Battagram seized a donkey slaughterhouse and arrested two suspects during a raid in Kuzabanda on Tuesday. The Additional Assistant Commissioner and a Food Inspector led the operation after receiving a tip-off.

District Food Controller (DFC) Shad Muhammad told Dawn that they acted swiftly and discovered the donkey carcass at the scene. Moreover, they apprehended two men from Hunza and Mansehra in this donkey meat scandal.

“These individuals are neither professional butchers nor owners of any meat shops,” said Shad Muhammad. He further stressed, “A thorough investigation is required to verify the actual intent behind the meat’s use.”

Officials aim to determine if the suspects planned to sell the meat for human consumption. For now, they have ruled out the involvement of any licensed meat business.

Authorities filed an FIR against the suspects under Sections 272 and 273 of the Pakistan Penal Code. Section 272 deals with food adulteration meant for sale, while Section 273 covers the sale of harmful food or drink.

This incident has caused concern, especially since a similar case recently surfaced in Islamabad. Due to public outcry, food departments across different regions have started conducting more frequent checks.

Officials suspect a wider network may exist, as the suspects belong to different cities. Therefore, they have expanded the investigation to trace possible links.

The operation shows a proactive stance by Battagram’s administration. Instead of waiting, they moved fast on the tip-off to stop potential health risks.

As the case develops, authorities continue collecting more evidence and statements. They also plan to tighten checks on meat suppliers in nearby areas.

All in all, the quick action from local officers has helped prevent a potential public health issue. Further updates are expected once the investigation reaches the next stage.
