Electric vehicles (EVs) are in high demand in the modern age. As petroleum prices continue to fluctuate, the public is contemplating a shift to EVs. Increased awareness of the detrimental environmental effects of petroleum and gasoline has also prompted much discussion about the transition to more environmentally friendly and greener transport mediums.
Oil prices have notoriously tormented Pakistan. Meanwhile, climatic patterns have also changed in the region due to factors attributable to fuel emissions.
However, the supply of such vehicles is limited in Pakistan against the backdrop of growing demand. Fortunately, China’s BYD is expected to roll out EVs in the foreseeable future, which will help reduce the deficit.
China’s BYD to Roll Out its First Locally Assembled Car By Mid-2026
China’s leading electric vehicle manufacturer, BYD, has collaborated with Mega Motor Company, a subsidiary of Pakistani utility Hub Power, to build Pakistan’s first-ever EV assembly plant.

The plant has been under construction since April, and BYD Pakistan is confident that it will roll out its first car by July or August 2026.
BYD’s heightened interest in the automobile market of Pakistan comes against the backdrop of increasing demand for EVs in the country and governmental incentives offered by the Pakistani state.
Danish Khaliq, Vice President (VP) of Sales and Strategy at BYD Pakistan, claims that the plant would initially have the capacity to produce 25,000 units a year on a double shift.
In 2024, the market size for EVs and plug-in hybrid cars was around 1000 units in Pakistan. Khaliq expects this number to grow by three to four times this year.
BYD is targeting a 30-35% share, helping meet the growing demand for EVs and plug-in cars in Pakistan. However, there could be export opportunities in right-hand drive regions in the future.
The next phase of this endeavour will see the launch of BYD’s Shark-6 plug-in hybrid pickup truck. Plug-ins are more practical because Pakistan faces a shortage of charging stations.

A New Era for Pakistan’s Auto Industry
BYD’s decision to begin assembling electric vehicles in Pakistan is a significant leap towards a green future. With government support, growing demand for EVs, and rising environmental awareness, Pakistan is poised to become a serious player in the South Asian EV market.
If executed well, this project could reduce import reliance, boost local employment, and put Pakistan on the regional EV manufacturing map.
