A bomb attack on a truck carrying coal miners in southwestern Pakistan killed at least 11 people and injured six others. The incident happened on Friday in the Harnai area of Balochistan province when the truck was taking the workers to a coal mine.

“An improvised explosive device was planted at the roadside, which exploded when a truck carting coal miners reached the site,” an official said. The official, who did not want to be named, also said that the bomb may have been detonated remotely. No group has yet claimed responsibility for this attack.

Hazrat Wali Agha, the region’s deputy commissioner, said that 17 miners were in the truck when the bomb exploded. A doctor at the local hospital said that two of the injured miners were in critical condition.

Balochistan, which shares borders with Iran and Afghanistan, is rich in minerals. Separatist Baloch groups have been waging an insurgency there for about ten years. Islamist militants are also active in the region.
