beware-the-heatwave-might-be-triggering-skin-conditions

Summer can be quite harsh in certain areas of Pakistan, particularly in Sindh and South Punjab. These regions are experiencing a persistent heatwave, leading to mild discomfort and even heatstroke. What’s worse is that recently, a skin specialist, Dr. Waqar Malik, reported that the effects of heatwave are going beyond just dehydration as it is now causing various skin conditions like fungal infections, acne flare-ups and body odor issues.

In cities suffering from severe heatwave, citizens are reporting prickly heat, foot fungus, under arm infections and rashes. If these conditions are left untreated, they can cause pigmentation and recurring skin-conditions that can worsen over time, Dr. Malik Confirmed.

What Does a Heat Rash Look Like?ย

One of the most common effects of the heatwave is rash. Heat rash are usually raised spots about 2-4mm, at times even filled with fluid. These spots are grey or white and might be hard to see on dark skin.

Personal Hygiene is Keyย

To prevent such skin conditions from happening, the key is personal hygiene. Dr. Malik recommended taking a shower twice a day, especially during humid days when you are sweating a lot. The use of prickly heat powders is also recommended on skin folds, as well as cooling gels like Aloe Vera. Any heavy cream should strictly be avoided, and people who wear makeup should avoid putting on too much, for that will clog the pores and cause acne during the humidity.

Clothes also make a huge difference. Tight-fitting and thick material clothes, like tights and pants, should be avoided, instead, one should wear loose-fitting clothes that allow the air to pass. Choose fabrics like lawn, cotton or linen that are soft and breathable on the skin. Also, wear light colours as they do not absorb heat but rather reflect it.

Dr. Malik also emphasised on not being under direct sun in this heatwave during peak hours i.e. between 11 am to 4pm, and apply sunscreen when doing so.
