Artificial Intelligence (AI) Chatbots are revolutionary. It offers personalised learning and communication experiences, fueling an unprecedented range of individual applications.

Students can get their school assignments done, teachers can set questions, and corporate employees can draft emails. In short, it can do everything more efficiently than a human could.

However, there were always concerns about privacy and security. Theoretically, even the most complex and sophisticated chatbots could fail because of the potential failure of underlying software.

On March 20, 2023, these concerns became an unfortunate reality as a bug on ChatGPT led to a major privacy breach, with personal AI chats of many users revealed to someone else.

A Cache Mix-up Resulted in Strangers Peeking at Personal AI Chats

In an incident that was publicly acknowledged by OpenAI itself, a bug was discovered in the open-source Redis client library, which led to a cache mix-up, where some logged-in users saw the AI chat history of other users.

OpenAI reported that only 1.2% of ChatGPT Plus subscribers were online at the time of the cache mix-up. However, confidential information such as credit card details could have unintentionally been disclosed, raising major security dilemmas.

Fortunately, the response was swift. ChatGPT went offline temporarily. OpenAI immediately reached out to the Redis maintainers to resolve the issue. All affected users were notified that their payment details may have been leaked.,

A full review of the system’s architecture was conducted with extensive tests of the fixes to the bug. The American AI company was transparent about the data breach and publicly apologised to all users who may have been affected by the incident.

Users Must Be Careful on All AI Platforms

In the arena of AI chatbots, ChatGPT, especially its premium version, has stood above its competitors with sophisticated architecture and a user-friendly interface. However, GPT is not infallible.

The cache mix-up in March 2023 was proof that even the most sophisticated and secure AI platforms can fail, especially if the underlying software architecture has been compromised. Nonetheless, the incident gave users an important lesson, too.

Your AI chatbot may be able to answer anything, but don’t put any sensitive information into a chat that you don’t want others to see.
