Tuesday saw the launch of Tongyi Qianwen, an internal product of Alibaba Cloud, the cloud computing division of Chinese internet giant Alibaba.

According to a press statement from the firm, Tongyi Qianwen, which can speak both Chinese and English, will initially be used on DingTalk, Alibaba’s office communication software, and Tmall Genie, a seller of smart home equipment.

The business announced at the 2023 Alibaba Cloud Conference that it would “shortly” integrate an AI-powered chatbot into every Alibaba product, from e-commerce to enterprise communication. However, a timeline for the release is not available as of yet.

Ever since the announcement the Chinese giant Alibaba traded more than 3% higher, but has since pared some gains. Shares of Baidu in Hong Kong were down 6%.

“We are at a technological watershed moment driven by generative AI and cloud computing, and businesses across all sectors have started to embrace intelligence transformation to stay ahead of the game,” said Daniel Zhang, chairman, and CEO of Alibaba Group and CEO of Alibaba Cloud Intelligence, in a statement.

“We hope to facilitate businesses from all industries with their intelligence transformation and, ultimately, help boost their business productivity, and expand their expertise and capabilities while unlocking more exciting opportunities through innovations,” said Jingren Zhou, CTO of Alibaba Cloud Intelligence, in the release.

According to the company, “The new AI model will be integrated across Alibaba’s various businesses to improve user experience shortly. The company’s customers and developers will have access to the model to create customized AI features cost-effectively.” 

Features Of Tongyi Qianwen

Tongyi Qianwen, which can operate in both Chinese and English, will initially be added to DingTalk, Alibaba’s office messaging app, according to the business.

The company stated that it will carry out a variety of activities, including recording meeting interactions into notes, composing emails, and creating business proposals. Alibaba claimed that it would also be incorporated into Tmall Genie, a smart speaker with Amazon’s Alexa voice assistant.
