Ever Wondered Why the US Has So Many Foreign Military Bases? Here’s Why

The United States has a dense military footprint. It is one of the largest global military networks in history, and this didn’t happen overnight. Today, US foreign bases span more than 80 countries, and the reasons are more complex than just security.

The Global Network

The U.S. foreign bases are staggering in scale. Estimates suggest around 750 bases worldwide, with 10 countries having nearly 4 in each. This is a rare occurrence, with very few nations possessing such a daunting overseas military presence.

The scale of these bases is varied. The network comprises massive installations in Germany and Japan that hold a permanent role, as well as smaller “lily pad” sites used for drones and rapid deployment. Officials frame this as a necessity for global stability, but critics argue that this is simply modern-day imperial reach.

How It All Began

The roots of U.S. foreign bases can be traced back to 1823, with the establishment of the Monroe Doctrine. The policy declared the Western Hemisphere as off-limits to European colonisation. The ideology normalised U.S. intervention in nearby regions.

Things went south after the Spanish-American War, with the U.S. gaining territories like Guam and the Philippines. During World War II, the expansion was in full swing.

In a landmark deal, the U.S. traded 50 destroyers to Britain for 99-year leases on bases in regions such as Trinidad and Jamaica. By 1945, the country was building more than 100 bases per month, shaping the world’s first true global network.

Cold War Expansion

The Cold War rise urged the U.S. to accelerate its expansion. Military bases served as essential tools to counter Soviet influence, and the U.S. deployed troops in European and Asian countries like South Korea and Vietnam.

U.S. became deeply embedded in Latin America. Bases turned into self-contained zones, dubbed “Little Americas” that came with American schools, housing, and infrastructure. Presently, these Cold War-era bases remain active despite the original threats being eliminated.

Modern Strategy or Fixed Presence?

After 2001, what many regard as the post 9/11 era, the strategy around U.S. foreign bases shifted. Large “super bases” cropped up in regions like the Middle East that supported operations linked to the War on Terror.

Since 2001, the U.S. has spent more than $6 trillion on warfare in this region alone. Many claim that these aren’t defensive outposts and serve as launch points for military action. Newer strategies are more inclined to flexibility. Rather than being dependent on permanent bases, the U.S. now operates through temporary access agreements and mobile forces.

Can These Bases Be Closed?

While the Pentagon claims that closing bases is an impossibility, history says otherwise. Processes like Base Realignment and Closure (BRAC) allow the system to scale back. Through BRAC, the U.S. shut down or restructured multiple installations.

However, this is not a simple matter of logistics. More importantly, politics and perception are at play. By reducing U.S. foreign bases, the country may be perceived as declining in global influence, which is something policymakers are reluctant to step into.

The Bigger Picture

Ultimately, the story of U.S. foreign bases is not centred on defence. Complex elements such as perception, global control, and long-term strategy are at play. While many consider them to be stabilising forces, others criticise their domination, financial cost, and outdated approach.

In a time where global dynamics are in a state of flux, it is yet to be seen whether this network shrinks or expands.
