Karachi has installed speed-limit signs along its busiest road, Shahra-e-Faisal, following the launch of the e-challan system.
DSP (Admin) Kashif Nadeem said cars, jeeps, and similar vehicles must not exceed 60 km/h. Heavy vehicles such as buses and trucks have a 30 km/h limit. Motorcycles are also restricted to 60 km/h. Cameras will automatically issue challans to vehicles that exceed these limits.
The Sindh government introduced the e-challan system to enforce traffic laws and protect citizens’ lives and property.
Opposition parties and some members of the public have criticised the system. However, Sindh Senior Minister Sharjeel Inam Memon said public safety remains the government’s top priority.
Officials explained that the automated system removes human discretion, prevents confrontations, and reduces bias, ensuring accountability on the roads. Sindh Chief Minister Murad Ali Shah stated that the system replaces the old manual process. AI-enabled CCTV cameras detect over-speeding, running red lights, and helmet violations.
In the initial phase, authorities installed 200 cameras across Karachi. They plan to expand the network to 12,000 cameras city-wide and later into other districts of Sindh. The system links with the Citizens-Police Liaison Committee to provide transparent oversight and allow citizens to lodge complaints.
