After seven long years of heartbreak, addiction, love, and loss, the ‘Euphoria’ Season 3 finale put out the most devastating plotline in the show’s history. What began as a coming-of-age drama wrapped up as a farewell that few fans saw coming.
The final episode of Euphoria closed several major storylines while raising new questions about the future of its characters. More importantly, it brought the journey of Zendaya’s Rue Bennett to a heartbreaking end.
Rue’s Story Ends in Tragedy
The finale picks up immediately after the craziness of the previous episode. Rue escapes danger and seeks refuge, believing she may finally have a chance to move forward.
However, events take a darker turn when pills she consumes are revealed to be laced with fentanyl. After years of battling addiction, Rue dies from an overdose while staying at Ali’s home. The moment is both shocking and painfully fitting for a character whose struggle with substance abuse defined much of the series.
Series creator Sam Levinson later explained the creative decision, saying, “It just felt like the honest ending.”
He also noted that the story reflects the devastating reality of addiction in the fentanyl era.
An Emotional Tribute to Angus Cloud
One of the episode’s most touching moments arrives through Rue’s dream sequence. In it, she imagines reuniting with Fezco, played by Angus Cloud.
The scene comes with loaded emotional weight because Cloud passed away in 2023. Fans viewed the sequence as a tribute to both the beloved actor and one of the show’s most cherished characters.
Meanwhile, Ali, played by Colman Domingo, discovers Rue’s death and becomes the emotional centre of the finale. His final prayer for Rue delivers one of the episode’s most memorable moments.

Major Deaths and Missing Screen Time
The ‘Euphoria’ Season 3 finale did not stop with Rue. Laurie, portrayed by Martha Kelly, takes her own life as authorities close in on her criminal operation.
Earlier, the series had already taken viewers aback with the death of Nate Jacobs, played by Jacob Elordi. Together, these losses pummeled the emotional impact of the show.
At the same time, several original fan favourites received surprisingly limited attention. Jules, played by Hunter Schafer, appears for a brief moment and speaks no dialogue. Lexi, portrayed by Maude Apatow, also remains largely on the sidelines.

Is This Really the End?
The ‘Euphoria’ Season 3 finale feels very much like a series ending rather than a season ending. Shortly after the episode aired, Levinson confirmed that the show’s journey had concluded.
For many viewers, the ending will be divisive. However, everyone can agree that the ‘Euphoria’ Season 3 finale stayed true to the show’s themes of choices, consequences, and redemption, while delivering a farewell that will be discussed for years.
As Rue says in her final voiceover, “May God bless us all.”
And with those haunting words, one of television’s most talked-about dramas comes to a close.
