The Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) has appointed Mike Hesson as the head coach of the Pakistan men’s white-ball team. Yes, the same Hesson, who helped turn New Zealand into a world-class white-ball force.

PCB chairman Mohsin Naqvi made the announcement via his official X (formerly Twitter) account, confirming that after going through a pool of applications, the board had found their man.

“After evaluation of numerous applications received against the vacancy, I’m pleased to announce that former New Zealand cricketer and renowned coach, Mike Hesson, will join us as the new Whiteball Head Coach for the Pakistan National Team, effective May 26th,” Naqvi wrote.

Who is Mike Hesson?

If you’ve followed cricket over the past decade, Hesson’s name should ring a bell. He’s the man behind New Zealand’s rise in the 2010s — not just tactically sharp, but a calm presence who knew how to bring the best out of big-match players.

Under Mike Hesson, the Kiwis made it to the 2015 World Cup final, transformed their mindset, and earned a reputation for playing smart, fearless cricket.

More recently, he’s been serving as the head coach of Islamabad United, the defending PSL champions. So yes, he’s no stranger to Pakistan cricket either — a big plus.

Why the Appointment Makes Sense

Let’s be honest — Pakistan’s white-ball performance lately has been… patchy. Talented? Always. Consistent? Not so much.

With the T20 World Cup on the horizon, the team needs structure, calm heads, and someone who understands modern white-ball dynamics. Hesson checks all those boxes.

Hesson is currently focused on Islamabad United’s PSL 10 campaign, which resumes from May 17. The final is scheduled to be played on May 25. So, he’ll officially take over as Pakistan’s white-ball head coach on May 26.

It’s also worth noting that the position became vacant after Aqib Javed’s interim stint ended following Pakistan’s tour of New Zealand last month.
