YouTube is testing in-application direct messages again, fulfilling the requests of millions of users who had been demanding the top feature for years.
The old direct message (DM) tool was removed in 2019, but it proved to be popular during its brief stint. If the test expands globally and reaches Pakistan, it could reshape how we share videos, Shorts, and live streams online.
What is YouTube’s In-App Direct Messages Feature?
The world’s leading video-sharing platform, YouTube, has confirmed that it is experimenting with a special feature that will allow direct messages inside the app. This inbuilt DM feature lets users:
- Share YouTube videos instantly
- Chat about videos in a private thread
- Accept or decline chat invites
- Block/Report users if needed
- Keep conversations moderated under YouTube’s Community Guidelines
Currently, the demanded feature is available in Ireland and Poland only. Users above 18 are allowed to use this feature. However, considering its popularity, a global rollout of the in-app DM feature is extremely likely.
However, an official name has not been announced for YouTube’s latest feature. Since it is still in its experimental phase, nothing can be said for certain.
How Will This Feature Affect YouTube Users?
There is a reason the DM feature was extremely popular in 2019. It allowed direct communication between two users, making YouTube more “social,” and bringing the platform up to the interactive scale of Instagram, Facebook, and TikTok.
Creators also have much to gain from such an interactive feature because it can completely remould community engagement. Instead of comments and replies under videos, there’s potential for private sharing and discussion inside YouTube itself.
If YouTube allows in-platform DMs, creators and businesses might build more direct engagement, maybe even run campaigns or moderate communities via YouTube rather than redirecting to other apps.
YouTube typically tests features in small EU markets before mass rollout. If feedback is strong, Pakistan, being a major YouTube region, is likely to be included in 2026’s early global expansion.
