When it comes to Rohit Sharma, there is always chatter – be it about his form, fitness, or future. But the Indian ODI captain has once again reminded everyone why he continues to matter in Indian cricket. Reports from Bengaluru suggest that the 38-year-old passed the BCCI’s newly introduced Bronco Test with flying colours.
A New Test in Town
The Bronco Test might sound like something out of rugby, and that is because it is. Originally designed to test rugby players’ endurance, it demands repeated shuttle runs of 20, 40, and 60 metres, performed in five continuous sets. Gruelling? Absolutely. But that is exactly why the BCCI has adopted it to measure cricketers’ fitness.
This was the first time the test was officially conducted at the BCCI’s Centre of Excellence, alongside the traditional Yo-Yo Test.
Every player who took part on August 30 and 31 cleared it, but Rohit’s numbers drew particular attention. Even pacer Prasidh Krishna earned praise for posting strong results.
Why Rohit’s Performance Matters
Fitness and Rohit Sharma have often been part of the same debate. Critics have long questioned whether his body can keep up with the demands of international cricket. Yet here he is, 38 years old, pushing through one of the toughest endurance drills and passing with ease.
Observers described his physical conditioning as impressive, proving he is still committed to leading from the front in the 50-over format.
This comes at an interesting point in his career. Rohit has already retired from T20 internationals and Test cricket, making ODIs his last remaining format for India. His focus, therefore, is sharper than ever.
Looking Back at Rohit’s Test Journey
The decision to step away from Tests earlier this year was not entirely surprising. In May, shortly after whispers of him being removed as Test captain, Rohit announced his retirement with immediate effect. He walked away with 4301 runs in 58 matches at an average of 40.57, including 12 centuries and 18 fifties.
While he had highs, such as leading India to the World Test Championship final, his struggles in the Border-Gavaskar Trophy against Australia, where he scored just 31 runs across five innings, cast a shadow over his final series.
It was the end of an era, though not one without its share of memorable innings and milestones.
Eyes on the Australia Series
For now, Rohit’s attention is firmly on the upcoming ODI series in Australia on October 19, 23, and 25. Having just led India to a T20 World Cup triumph in June before retiring from the format, he would love nothing more than to repeat that success in the 50-over arena.
Passing the Bronco Test is more than just a box ticked; it is a statement that he still has the hunger, fitness, and drive to perform at the highest level.
