The Pakistan Super League (PSL) 11 has not even started yet, but it is already attracting attention from around the cricketing world. This time, the spotlight is on the coaching staff.
New Zealand’s assistant coaches Luke Ronchi and Jacob Oram are set to work with Islamabad United during PSL 11, even though the tournament overlaps with international commitments for the Black Caps.
The decision means both coaches will miss New Zealand’s upcoming series commitments, highlighting once again the growing influence of franchise leagues on the global cricket calendar.
Ronchi Takes Charge at Islamabad United
For Luke Ronchi, the move feels like a return to familiar territory. The former New Zealand wicketkeeper batter was appointed head coach of Islamabad United in January, marking a new chapter in his long association with the franchise.
Ronchi previously represented Islamabad United as a player and featured in three PSL seasons after making his debut in the 2017-18 edition. Now he returns to the franchise in a leadership role.
As New Zealand’s batting coach, Ronchi holds an important position within the Black Caps setup. However, the timing of the PSL means he will not be available for the national team’s upcoming assignments.
Jacob Oram Joins as Bowling Coach
Ronchi will not be alone in the Islamabad United dugout. Former New Zealand all-rounder Jacob Oram will join him as part of the coaching staff, working as one of his assistants and focusing on the bowling unit.
Oram currently serves as one of the assistant coaches for the Black Caps. His involvement in the PSL, therefore, means New Zealand will temporarily lose two key members of their coaching group during a busy international window.
Clash with New Zealand’s International Fixtures
The scheduling conflict is quite clear. New Zealand are set to host South Africa in a five-match T20I series from March 15 to March 25. Meanwhile, the Pakistan Super League begins on March 26, leaving virtually no gap between the two events.
Following the South Africa series, the Black Caps are also scheduled to tour Bangladesh for three ODIs and three T20Is in April, although the exact match dates for that tour are yet to be finalised.
Because of this overlap, Ronchi and Oram will not be available for those international assignments.
New Zealand Cricket Supports the Move
Despite the clash in schedules, New Zealand Cricket has backed the decision.
Performance manager Mike Sandle explained that overseas opportunities like the PSL can play an important role in developing coaching expertise.
According to Sandle, gaining experience in franchise leagues allows coaches to work in different environments, learn new strategies and bring valuable knowledge back to the national setup.
He also pointed out that just like players, coaches from New Zealand are now in demand across global leagues.
In his view, the experience Ronchi and Oram gain during the PSL could ultimately benefit the Black Caps in the long run.
