While Hyderabad Kingsmen suffered a heavy defeat to Lahore Qalandars in their PSL 11 opener, much of the conversation after the match revolved around one name that was missing from the team sheet.
Maaz Sadaqat.
And even after Captain Marnus Labuschagne offered an explanation, not everyone seemed convinced.
The big absence that caught everyone’s eye
When the Kingsmen announced their playing XI, fans were quick to notice Sadaqat’s absence.
It was surprising. The youngster has been one of the most talked-about emerging players in Pakistan, often mentioned alongside rising star Sameer Minhas. Known for his aggressive top-order batting and useful left-arm spin, Sadaqat has already built a reputation with Pakistan Shaheens.
So naturally, expectations were high. That is why his omission raised eyebrows even before the first ball was bowled.
Labuschagne’s explanation
After the match, Marnus Labuschagne addressed the situation in the press conference.
According to him, Sadaqat missed out due to injury.
“Yeah, he was injured with… I don’t know if I’m meant to say what sort of injury that was,” Labuschagne said. “A side. He had a side strain. I don’t know the severity, but hopefully we’ll have him back very soon.”
On the surface, it seems straightforward.
However, the way the explanation came out, slightly hesitant and uncertain, left room for doubt among fans. And in modern cricket, fans rarely let such moments pass quietly.
While injuries are part of the game, the reaction online suggested that supporters were not entirely sold on the reasoning. The uncertainty in Labuschagne’s response only added fuel to the debate.
Was it purely a fitness issue, or was there more to the decision? For now, there is no clear answer. But one thing is certain, Sadaqat’s return will be closely watched.
