Winning a World Cup is special. Defending it is even harder. Naturally, when India achieved that rare feat in the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2026, the celebrations were bound to be grand.
Soon after India’s emphatic triumph over New Zealand in Ahmedabad, the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) announced a massive cash reward of INR 131 crore for the World Cup-winning side.
The announcement underlines just how significant this victory is for Indian cricket.
A Historic Achievement
India’s triumph in the T20 World Cup final was not just another title. It was a record-breaking moment.
By defeating New Zealand by 96 runs at the Narendra Modi Stadium, India successfully defended their T20 World Cup crown. In doing so, they became the first team in tournament history to retain the title.
Moreover, the victory also gave India their third T20 World Cup trophy, making them the most successful team in the competition’s history.
Previously, only the West Indies and England had won the tournament twice. Adding another milestone, India also became the first host nation to win the T20 World Cup on home soil.
Reward for Players, Staff and Selectors
Following the victory, the BCCI issued an official statement congratulating everyone involved in the historic campaign.
“The Board congratulates the players, support staff and selectors once again on this historic achievement and wishes them continued success in the future,” the board said.
While the statement did not specify the exact distribution of the prize money, the INR 131 crore reward is expected to be shared among the players, coaching staff and selectors.
How Rewards Were Distributed Last Time?
This is not the first time the BCCI has announced a large reward after a World Cup victory. After India won the 2024 T20 World Cup, the board announced a cash prize of INR 125 crore.
At that time, each of the 15 players received INR 5 crore, while every member of the coaching staff was awarded INR 2.5 crore. Meanwhile, the five-member selection committee led by Ajit Agarkar received INR 1 crore each.
Although the board has not confirmed the exact breakdown this time, a similar distribution model could be expected.
India’s Growing Trophy Cabinet
The victory further strengthens India’s dominance in world cricket. Not only are they the reigning T20 World Cup champions, but they are also the current holders of the Champions Trophy.
Looking ahead, the Indian team now has another major target on the horizon. If they manage to win the ODI World Cup next year, they could complete an extraordinary run of global titles.
For now, though, the focus remains on celebrating a remarkable achievement.
