Sydney Thunder’s wait for a first win in Big Bash League (BBL) 15 is finally over, and fittingly, it came on the back of a classic Shadab Khan performance.

The leg-spinner was at his ruthless best in Canberra on Monday night, guiding Thunder to a comfortable 34-run win over Brisbane Heat at Manuka Oval.

It was one of those nights where everything just clicked for the men in green and black.

Openers Set the Tone Early

Batting first, Thunder wasted no time in stamping their authority. Sam Konstas and Matthew Gilkes came out with clear intent and made full use of the powerplay, stitching together a commanding 127-run opening stand.

Konstas played the role of the anchor beautifully, scoring 63 from 45 balls and peppering the boundary with eight crisp fours. At the other end, Gilkes looked fluent and fearless, racing to a top score of 76 off 48 deliveries, which included three sixes and four boundaries.

The platform was strong, and Thunder made sure they cashed in.

Late Flourish Pushes Thunder Past 190

While captain David Warner had a quiet outing and departed for just seven, Sam Billings ensured the innings did not lose momentum. The wicket-keeper batter provided the late spark with a quick 25 off 11 balls, smashing two fours and two sixes to push Thunder to a healthy 193-4.

For the Brisbane Heat, Jack Wildermuth stood out with two wickets, while Shaheen Afridi picked up one despite going for a few runs. Still, the damage had already been done.

Shadab Turns the Game on Its Head

Chasing 194 was always going to be tricky, but the Brisbane Heat never really found their rhythm, and Shadab Khan made sure of that.

The Pakistani all-rounder ripped through the Heat’s top order with a spell full of control, variation and intent. He removed Colin Munro early, then sent back Wildermuth before claiming the prized wicket of Matt Renshaw, who top-scored for Heat with 43 off 28 balls.

Every time Heat looked like building a partnership, Shadab stepped in and broke it.

Heat Falter Under Pressure

There were brief signs of resistance. Hugh Weibgen fought hard for his 30, while Max Bryant chipped in with 25. However, there was no big partnership to carry the chase deep.

With wickets falling regularly and the asking rate climbing, Heat limped to 159 for 6, well short of the target. Daniel Sams played his part too, picking up two key wickets to keep the pressure firmly on the chasing side.

Shadab’s BBL 15 Just Keeps Getting Better

Shadab Khan finished with superb figures of 4 for 24 from his four overs, sealing a comprehensive win for Thunder. It was another reminder of his all-round value, especially in this format.

What makes it even more impressive is his consistency this season. Before this match, he had already chipped in with scores of 34 and 41, and now he has added a match-winning four-wicket haul to his tally.

So far, he has easily been the standout Pakistani performer in BBL 15.
