Afghanistan could not have asked for a brighter start to their Asia Cup 2025 campaign. All-rounder Azmatullah Omarzai lit up the Sheikh Zayed Cricket Stadium on Tuesday night by smashing the fastest half-century in Afghanistan’s T20I history, guiding his side to a thumping win over Hong Kong.
Omarzai Breaks Nabi’s Long-Standing Record
Heading into the tournament, Omarzai’s form had been patchy at best. But cricket has a funny way of turning narratives around.
Walking in with Afghanistan wobbling at 95-4 in the 13th over, the right-hander wasted no time making his presence felt. With clean striking and fearless intent, he brought up his fifty in just 20 balls, overtaking Mohammad Nabi’s 21-ball fifty from 2016 against the UAE.
Omarzai’s knock of 53 off 21 deliveries, decorated with five towering sixes and two boundaries, came at a crucial stage. By the time he was dismissed in the 19th over, Afghanistan had turned a tricky situation into a commanding one.
Fastest T20I fifties for Afghanistan:
- Azmatullah Omarzai – 20 balls vs Hong Kong, 2025
- Mohammad Nabi – 21 balls vs UAE, 2016
- Hazratullah Zazai – 22 balls vs Ireland, 2018
- Najibullah Zadran – 22 balls vs Zimbabwe, 2019
The Partnership That Changed the Game
Omarzai was not alone in steadying the innings. Partnering with Sediqullah Atal, he stitched together a lively stand that gave Afghanistan much-needed momentum. Their aggressive intent put Hong Kong on the back foot and helped Afghanistan post a competitive 188-run target.
Meanwhile, chasing 188 was always going to be a tall order for Hong Kong, and their inexperience showed. They crumbled against a disciplined Afghan bowling attack, limping to just 94-9 in 20 overs.
What promised to be a contest quickly turned into a one-sided affair, as Afghanistan wrapped up a 94-run victory to open their Asia Cup campaign in style.
